Surveyor Responsibilities

During Loading

  • Ask for an SGO update from Brazilian Lay Engineer on bridge from Microsoft chart and convert to autocad, so to update the Navipac drawing.
  • Ask for length sheets of the products being loaded
  • If loading into the carousel,  prior to product being spooled on measure from flange to the first mark and find out the sequence of marks – from here draw out the product markings in AutoCAD. This will help when you need to measure and put marks of the product for the Chinese fingers. Chinese fingers are put on the product prior to the second end going into the carousel (normally around 178m and 78m from second end, see task plan for exact figures), this is so tension is kept in the product and prevents wraps falling.
  • Get photos or check the plates on the ends of the product. The lengths sheets are always the last thing onboard so using these plates means you get the lengths earlier and therefore can start planning the route that will be laid.
  • Read the procedures and use the sausage diagrams to find out the sequence that the product is going to be deployed.
  • Design the route using the information in the procedures, paying particular attention to the hub co-ordinate, the azimuth of the product leaving the well, the placement of the RxF Connector. Things to remember when designing a route: 1) need at least 75m straight coming off a well or PLET 2) 6” product minimum curve radius 50m, 4” product minimum curve radius 40m and umbilical 35-40m minimum curve radius.
  • Send route in .rle format and some screen grabs illustrating route to the Brazilian OM, so he can review and decide if it is ok.

Prior to Laying

  • TS Dip to be taken and processed and APOS to be updated with the appropriate .usr file profile . Keep the Ts Dip register up to date.
  • Pre-Lay survey maybe required if another vessel has not carried out the survey.
  • If product is on the reel, measure flange to first mark and confirm the sequence of marks as product comes off the reel and to the under bender.
  • Make sure the correct displayline, runline and all relevant waypoints are being shown in Navipac.
  • Check all Remote helmsman displays to confirm all the correct information is being illustrated.
  • Create the folders required in visual soft Archive.
  • Check headers on DVR’s and OceanTools.
  • Create reference sheets
  • Monkey fist are installed on the product at the start and end of the curves on the route.

During Operations and Laying

  • Navipac 3.8.5- Log ROV TDM data
  • Take fixes on the monkey fists on pipeline and inform the bridge supervisor if there is too much or too little product on the seabed.
  • Oceantools Huddell software Update Headers depending on the task
  • Visualsoft-Record blackbox DVR  during laying activities channel 1 and 2 and Record into specific folders when performing tasks that require F2 grabs for reporting purposes.
  • If laying 6” production line and it is going into a PLET then we go onto deck and measure where camel humps are to be installed on the product. Normally around 65m of the products second end and then 17.5m, 15.5 and 11.5m from the second end (see task plans). If you know the sequence of marks on the products it is easy to work out where these measurements go.
  • When product is being installed over the BSR a friction clamp and a stopper clamp are installed. We have to go down on deck and measure the product for these too. See task plans for distances from first and second end.

Processing and Reporting

  • Process the ROV TDM track data and produce the required deliverables on Autocad 2010
  • Pass on any photos that are required for reporting F2 screengrabs

General

  • Sonardyne 8070-A5 -Issue beacons and retrieve beacons from the sink in the changing rooms on level 4. Recharge beacons and general maintenance.
  • Frequency Management -Give beacon codes to other vessel working in the field.
  • Navipac 3.8.5-Keep all background drawings as up to date as possible, updating them with as laid data we have produce and as laid data from other vessels. Using Appropriate Autocad packages
  • Navipac 3.8.5 Monitor the amount of runlines, displaylines and waypoints are loaded on the helmsman displays. Keep this to a minimum as it slows the network, PC and Navipac down.
  • Visualsoft-Monitor the space on the DVR’s hardrives, delete any blackbox files which is solely the ROV hanging in the TMS either on decent and ascent.
  • Visualsoft backups-Monitor the space on the NAS and the mirror drives
  • Visualsoft Monitor the tape drives and replace the tapes when required. Use the cleaning tape prior to putting new tapes in as this cleans out any old files and leads to less issues.

7 Navica Subsea 7 :- 04/06/2014 till 10/06/2014

Position:- Senior Survey Engineer

Client-Shell Project Pipelay GOER 2 Shell Gannet

Troubleshooting problems with survey equipment Navipac ROV systems Networking and computers plus Visualsoft software and hardware, in this case the Doppler Velocity Logger (DVL) RDI Workhorse using BBTalk software Intial problems talking with the hardware head on ROV resolved by bench testing at finding baud rate at 57600 instead of 9600 8N1 then the format between DVL and Navipac incorrect should have been PD06 this solved the CS command and garbage to Navipac but further issues with software when the DVL stopped we ended up not using it problem still ongoing for fix.

Beacon deployment and maintenance testing, Applied acoustics Kongsberg MST 319N’s plus DP SPT beacons helping out Marine crew basically stripped and changed batteries and inspection all 3 non operable first time I have ever seen this. We are using an emergency beacon instead. Survey morning meetings work procedures. We helped with the Visual Edit (DVR) Eventing to help out the processor with an overflow of work.

Re-termination when required and any other Technical work required. PHINS Navigation Phototonic Inertial Navigation System was the original very accurate Gyro as per specification for this job so I did a short PHINS Hardware and software course with DVL Doppler Velocity Logger. This piece of equipment is quite complex and difficult to set up and configure. It worked fine in the workshop at Andrew’s survey but never worked properly offshore and we spent nearly a week setting it up and eventually had to go back to using the Gyro mode only and the DVL individually this worked okay and was the only config to be accepted by the client!! More experience with PHINS required by all involved.
