Third Mate

To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing to express my interest as a candidate for a Third Mate position posted on your website. I am a career oriented maritime professional, experienced manager, and believe a Third Mate position would be a perfect fit for my experience and career goals. As you can see from my attached resume, I am a licensed Third Mate and First Class Great Lakes Pilot and have sailed on a variety of ships throughout my time as a cadet while earning my license.  I currently sail for Interlake Steamship Company on the Great Lakes.  I have been a Third Mate for Interlake Steamship Company since July 2015, shortly after graduating from the Great Lakes Maritime Academy.   In addition to my sailing experience, I have experience in inspecting and maintaining lifesaving and firefighting equipment to SOLAS standards and providing instruction to crew on the proper use of lifesaving appliances, including lifeboat and small, rescue boat operations.

As a Third Mate with Interlake Steamship Company, I have been able to start my professional career as a mariner, while gaining experience and learning all the skills and responsibilities required of a Third Mate.  My goals are to be a proficient, professional mariner aboard a vessel sailing upon the oceans.  I believe a Third Mate position with your outfit will help me work toward this goal and along the way I can be a valuable asset to your vessel.

In addition to my seagoing experience, I have also had extensive experience with managing a professional staff. Before enrolling in the Great Lakes Maritime Academy, I worked within the marketing and customer service industries for a number of years.  I have a tremendous amount of experience dealing with individuals on a professional level and alleviating concerns or disgruntlement's while all the time working toward the end goal. While this is not directly related to the marine field, many of the skills I developed as a marketing manager will help me to be a respected and efficient deck officer.

My extensive guest service and management experience in combination with my Third Mate experience make me an outstanding candidate for this seagoing position.
