Objective
Sail as a Third Mate, upgrade license with time.
Experience
•SS Horizon Hawaii; Container; summer ’07; 35 days
Watch standing was my primary responsibility as a deck cadet; I worked with the Captain and Chief Mate extensively developing proficiency in watch standing and management.
•SS Blue Ridge; Coastal Tanker; summer ’06, 99 days
I earned my Tankerman PIC (DL). As a deck cadet I worked daily with the deck officers in port and at sea to learn cargo operations, watch standing, maintenance of cargo and safety systems, and personnel management. I participated in cargo operations in every port, and under C/M’s guidance, took charge of cargo load and discharge ops, as well as assisted in preparation for entering and departing shipyard.
•MV Liberty; Ro-Ro; summer ’05, and fall ’06, 99 days
As an engine cadet I developed basic aptitude for maintenance of shipboard systems, both deck and engine. These days counted towards my QMED endorsement.
•MV Freedom; Ro-Ro; summer ’04, and fall ’05, 95 days
The Freedom was my first cadet shipping assignment. My learning curve was exponential as I built a foundation of knowledge of cargo operations, and began to develop my watch standing skills.
•TV Kings Pointer; multiple trips plebe summer through 1st class year
I acquired invaluable experience conning the vessel through the inland waters of the Long Island Sound. I applied my leadership capabilities managing a bridge watch team and during mooring operations, and in training of underclassmen.
•Internship at Maine Department of Environmental Protection
Obtained intimate knowledge of marine oil spill clean up and prevention operations with local and regional supporting organizations.
