Objective
To attain a position as a 3rd Assistant Engineer in a shipboard application or as a shore side engineer.
Experience
Cadet Shipped with American Steamship Company in the Great Lakes, aboard the coal and iron ore carrier Walter J. McCarthy Jr. in the summer of 2006. Worked directly underneath the First and Third Assistant Engineers operating, maintaining and repairing engine room machinery including the ships four 20 cylinder Electro-Motive Diesel engines, and two Caterpillar generators. Major overhauls included: power pack change-outs, complete main bearing replacements on two engines, clutch repair. Completed a sea project as part of the requirements.
Cadet Cruised freshman year in the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean and junior year in the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean aboard the T.S. State of Maine. Trained and worked in the engineering spaces operating and maintaining engine room machinery including the main engine: MAK 601C 6 cylinder 8046 HP diesel engine and three generators: MAK 332 900 KW. Stood watches as senior engineer in charge, transferred fuel underway and completed tasks assigned by the licensed engineers. Completed all check offs required by the Academy and passed both written and oral exams as part of the required training for Cadet Cruise.
