Third Assistant Engineer / Engineroom Operator, 2000 to 2009

Serve in essential role completing necessary repairs and maintenance to ensure efficiency of ship’s equipment and systems. Troubleshoot potential issues and determine need for adjustments to prevent disruptions to drilling operations. Repair and rebuild two- and four-stroke marine diesel engines by Fairbanks Morse, Caterpillar 3500 and 3600 series, Yanmar and Bergen. Operate and maintain lube and fuel oil purifiers, water distillation equipment, pumps, air compressors, azimuthing and stationary propulsion motors and thrusters, power management, electrical equipment, HVAC and other essential systems. Utilize specialized calibration devices to conduct tests and monitor functioning of all equipment. Perform daily watchkeeping to monitor equipment throughout the ship and maintain extensive records. Contact vendors to order required items, coordinating delivery according to urgency of need. Monitor staff performance and ensured compliance with ABS, ISM, and governmental regulations to facilitate high level of quality assurance.

Executed maintenance and repair processes as needed to realize maximum efficiency for nuclear submarine systems. Provided oversight and instruction to 16-member team, continually evaluating adherence to quality assurance guidelines. Trained approximately 40 associates to operate equipment and respond appropriately to safety emergencies. Performed required procedures for marine diesel engines, HVAC equipment, oxygen-generating equipment, water distillation plants, fuel and oil systems, steam turbines and generators, steam and hydraulic valves, pumps, R-114 HVAC systems, and other critical ship apparatus. Performed tests and calibration on temperature and pressure gauges to detect level inconsistencies and tracked information in comprehensive records. Procured parts needed to maximize efficiency of engine room operations, networking with vendors to acquire most cost-effective supplies.
