PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE



Sep 2005-till date

Working as a Senior Marine Safety Inspector with Transport Canada, Vancouver, BC; and involved in Technical Services, such as Plan Approvals of Structures & Outfit design. Check the drawings meet the various rules & regulations of the Canada Shipping Act & other International bodies to which Canada is a Signatory & all issues related to safety of Shipping. Regional Contact Point for the Western Region on issues related to Tonnage Measurement of Ships.



Nov 2004-Sep 2005

Worked as a Senior Marine Safety Inspector with Transport Canada, Sarnia, Ontario; and involved in Technical Services, such as Plan Approvals of Structures & Outfit design. Dec 2002-Nov 2004

Worked as a Senior Naval Architect in Fleetway Inc., Ontario Canada; and engaged in Conversion design of Ice Breaker to an Oceanographic research vessel and other projects. Lead Engineer on Structures & Outfit design. Perform all structural calculations, validate and approve all drawings related to structures and outfit.



Sep 2001-June 2002

Worked as a Senior Naval Architect in MIL Systems, Ontario Canada; and was engaged in functional design of Fuel Oil Tank Barges for US Shipyard, Crane barge & Pipe laying Barges. Lead Engineer on Structures & Outfit design. Perform all structural calculations, validate and approve all drawings related to structures and outfit; undertaken FEM analysis of a Crane Barge and developed Software for concept design.



June 2001-July 2001

Worked as a Consultant in Singapore and engaged in the design drawing approvals, drawing -up of certain specifications built to commercial standards; and was engaged in the approval of the detail design calculations, outfit design and structural design drawings.



July 2000-May2001

Worked as a Project Manager (Design) in Singapore and engaged in the design & production drawing approvals of Tugs built to commercial standards; and was also engaged in the approval of the detail design calculations, outfit design and structural design drawings. Resolved all production related problems, including interfacing with the suppliers to meet the production requirement.



May 2000-June 2000

Worked as a Consultant in Singapore and helped setup a new Naval Architect consultancy company providing services to Southeast Asia.



Nov.94-March 2000

Worked as a Project Engineer/Senior Engineer, Defence Material Organisation, Ministry of Defence in Singapore and engaged in the design drawing approvals, drawing -up of certain specifications and the conduct & approving of trials for Naval Patrol vessel, built to commercial standards. Also engaged in the approval of the detail design calculations, outfit design and structural design drawings and conduct & approving of trials of a Landing ship Tank. Learned the application and limitations of the various commercial standards to naval ship design and construction. Involvement in all project Management issues had led to broaden the skill required for project management i.e. to maintain the planned schedule and the budgeted costs. Developed a comprehensive specification for NBCD for the Singapore Navy.



Jan.1986-Oct.1994

Worked as a Senior Design Officer Grade-1, Assistant Director, Directorate of Naval Design, New Delhi, India. Was responsible for the design and approval of a large frigate both structural and outfit design. Conversant with most design regulations and rules pertaining to naval ship design particularly of the UK Royal Navy and certain practices of the Russian Navy. Managed a team (abt. 50 people) of Mechanical Engineers/Naval Architects and Draftsmen for setting the design guidelines, establishing the specifications, selecting major equipment and oversee construction. Became conversant with inspection and Quality Assurance requirements and procedures.



Jul.1984-Jul.1985

Worked as Scientist-D, Deputy Director, Directorate of Naval R&D, New Delhi, India. Was responsible for approving, monitoring and sponsoring researches for the three naval research Labs. And Gained valuable experience in setting up research facilities for the Navy such as High Speed Towing Tank. This was mainly management work, which required technical input to the higher management like Steering Committee.



Apr.1983-Jul.1984

Worked as Reader (Senior Lecturer or Assistant Professor) in Dept. of Ship Technology, University of Cochin, and Kerala, India. Involved in undergraduate teaching and carrying out sponsored research in Computer aided ship design. Also Principal Investigator for a project financed by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India.



Dec. 1982-Apr.1983

Worked as a Scientific Pool Officer in the Dept. of Naval Architecture, IIT -Kharagpur, India, carrying out mainly teaching and research duties; and developed liking and skill for classroom teaching.



Oct 1977- Oct 1982

Awarded National Scholarship for Study abroad by the Ministry of Education, Government of India and proceeded abroad and obtained M.Sc. and PhD in Naval Architecture. M.Sc. course was partly by instruction and by thesis. The topic of the thesis was ‘Computer Data Based Management System for Material Management in shipyard’. It involved doing a technology survey of three shipyards and suggests ways on how to implement the latest technology in material management. Gained valuable experience in ways to conduct a technology assessment and also the implementation of a computer DBMS, and the techniques in material management.



PhD was by research and the topic of the thesis was ’A Computer model for the economic design and operation of Containership’. Main contribution was the development of a Techno-economic Computer model for use in preliminary design of Container ships. Became proficient in use of Risk Analysis,

taking uncertainty into account. The model can be used to study any Capital investment problem in face of uncertainty. Became proficient in FORTRAN programming and application of Engineering Economics in ship design.



Aug.1976-Aug.1977

Worked as a Naval Architect in Production and Design & Development Department of Bombay Marine Engineering Works Pvt. Ltd., Bombay, India .Was responsible (together with another Naval Architect and Mechanical Engineer) for running the shipyard and the design office, building mainly ships up to 1000 dwt. Gained experience in designing and building a whole ship. Undertook cost estimating for contracts and tenders



Jul.1975-Jul.1976

Worked as an Assistant Naval Architect in Outfit Design Office of Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd., Calcutta, India; was responsible for production of outfit drawings for commercial shipbuilding mainly Bulk-Carriers and Dredgers and gained valuable experience in the application of the various regulations such as SOLAS and IMO and the Class requirements.
