CITY OF WINSTON-SALEM, Winston-Salem, North Carolina September 2001-Present

Safety Inspector - Worked with assigned City Departments, including Utilities, Vegetation Management, DOT, Housing Services, public assembly venues, and Fleet Services, to ensure safe working and driving habits. Departments’ work includes but not limited to tree cutting and light logging, landscaping, installing and repairing underground utilities, installing and repairing traffic signs and signals and providing entertainment for the public. Performed observations at various work sites to reinforce work habits. Performed training for various groups in driver training, proper lifting, Hazard Communication, and forklift training. Worked with departmental safety committees to improve safety awareness within respective departments. Investigated collisions involving City vehicles to develop preventative measures and protect employees and City against fraudulent or unnecessary claims. Also planned, organized, and supervised audiometric testing for 200 employees.



• Wrote and taught Supervisory Safety Program for supervisors, managers, and department heads.

• Developed Weekly Safety Topics (toolbox meetings), to be read to employees as a way of improving safety awareness.

• Wrote improved seatbelt policy (awaiting approval) to include backseat passengers and tractor operators.

• Wrote Driver Improvement Program for drivers who had repeat collisions or whose driving was unacceptable.

• Instrumental in reducing preventable collisions by 40%.



GRIFFIN MANAGEMENT CORP., Winston-Salem, North Carolina December 1999-August 2001

Field Safety Manager - Organized a fledgling safety program for an electric utility contractor, including worker safety, electrical safety, driver training, data organization and analysis, auditing, and OSHA compliance programs.



• Improved worker and driver safety rates by over 10%.

• Reduced losses due to accidents and injuries by 15%.

• Developed and wrote Defensive Driving Program and Train-the-Trainer.

• Developed and wrote policies, including HazCom, Accident Review Board, and Driver Training.

Sr. Loss Prevention Consultant - Contract safety consulting for a variety of clients. Work included prospect inspections, fire prevention, employee safety and training, driver safety, OSHA, claims control issues and general loss prevention.



RILEY WITTLE, INC., Cincinnati, Ohio November 1997-February 1999

Director of Safety - Directed a safety program for an owner-operator fleet of 500 drivers. Supervised eight employees responsible for driver recruitment, training, and regulatory compliance (FMCSR). Interfaced with insurance carriers to identify loss sources and develop loss prevention criteria and practices.



• Improved monitoring of drivers' road habits by adding an "800-HOW’S MY DRIVING" program.

• Motivated drivers to improve safety habits by improving the safe driving award program.

ACORDIA/RAUH, Cincinnati, Ohio January 1996-November 1997

Sr. Loss Prevention Consultant - Advised clients of a large insurance agency regarding their safety programs. Clients included construction, manufacturing, trucking, government, and food processing. Responsibilities included driver and worker observation and training, inspections and investigations. Analyzed work procedures, accident data, and assisted with regulatory issues. Guided clients in establishing internal controls to reduce losses.



FEDERAL EXPRESS, Cincinnati, Ohio and Parsippany, New Jersey January 1984-January 1996

Sr. Safety Specialist - Administered safety for a 1000 employee district. Advised managers in hazard reduction, including worker, fire, and driver safety. Protected company assets by performing audits, inspections, and regulatory compliance activities. Investigated accidents and injuries. Collaborated in developing safety policies and training programs.



GCC BEVERAGES, INC., Miami Florida and Chestnut Hill Massachusetts August1980-January 1984

Safety Manager, Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co. of Miami (1982-1984) - Responsible for the safety of 500 employees at this bottling facility. Developed and administered worker, fleet safety, and fire prevention programs; provided supervisor safety training, including BST; and inspected facility. Administered Workers' Compensation and fleet claims control; investigated accidents and injuries.

Safety Advisor, Chestnut Hill Corporate Headquarters (1980-1982) - Produced bimonthly safety reports for regional offices and plants. Trained employees in basic BST and audited results. Additional duties: OSHA compliance activities, noise sampling and remediation, and inspections to reduce fire and general liability losses. Developed a Defense Driving Program and accompanying manual.



U.S. DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION, Kansas City, Missouri June 1979-August 1980

Highway Safety Technician, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration - Coordinated educational displays for fairs, civic meetings, etc. Demonstrated and explained safety air bags to the public. Researched and wrote a report entitled "Alternative Sentencing Programs for Traffic Offenders."



CENTRAL MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY, Warrensburg, Missouri June 1978-June 1979

Graduate Teaching Assistant, Safety Department - Taught advanced driving techniques to police officers and military personnel. Developed a film for high school driver education students. Designed a device to restrain the left foot of a stroke victim to prevent it from interfering with braking and retrained the victim to drive.



SWITZERLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS, Vevay, Indiana September 1975-June 1978

Driver Education Instructor - Expanded a summer-only program to year-round. Rewrote the entire curriculum. Maintained records, administered the program, and interfaced with state authorities for driver education.
