Experience


08/12 – 12/12: QMED/Oiler, University of Hawaii

Upon completion of my degree, I returned to sea aboard the R/V Ka’Imikai-O-Kanaloa, the UH 222’ Diesel Electric research vessel, and mother ship for the Pisces IV and Pisces V deep submergence research submersibles. Although only billeted as QMED, I filled the 2nd A/E and later A/E duties, including fuel transfers, and daily fuel and water calculations. During my time aboard, I participated in sub-ops, full ocean depth coring and dredging, and CTD sampling.



01/09 – 05/10: Oiler/Wiper, Ocean Services LLC.

After transferring to the Operations side of Stabbert Maritime, I began sailing as a Wiper aboard R/V Moana Wave, and the four point dive vessel R/V Ocean Pioneer. During the accumulated 289 days of sea time in this period, I typically stood unsupervised 12hr watches, performed fuel and ballast transfers, conducted inspections, and rebuilt equipment. I also operated, maintained, and assisted in repairing the ship’s engines, systems, and hydraulic cranes.



08/07 – 01/09: Stabbert Yacht and Ship

Seattle, WA

Employment at SYS demanded versatility in many areas; I functioned as Shipyard Competent Person, diver, drydock operator, crane operator, fire team member, rigger, mechanic, and apprentice ship fitter. I worked on diverse projects including vessel refits, conversions, ship repair, salvage, and facilities maintenance.



07/06 – 07/07: Aqua Dive Services

Seattle, WA

Commercial diving projects included:

• ship husbandry

• dry-docking inspections

• light salvage

• pier and pile repair and replacement

• floating structure maintenance



01/06 – 06/06: R/V Alucia (ex-Nadir)

Seattle, WA

Duties on this vessel conversion included:

• Shipyard Competent Person

• Rigging Supervisor



03/04 – 08/04: Piledriver’s Union

Oakland, CA

Commercial diving duties:

• pier and pile repair and replacement



10/01 – 10/02: SUBASE Point Loma

San Diego, CA

As a Security Leading Petty Officer, my duties included maintaining the safety and security of the base. I trained and performed in such areas as bomb searches, small unit tactics, and force protection/anti-terrorism actions.



10/00 – 10/01: Space and Naval Warfare Center

San Diego, CA

In the capacity of Staff Duty Officer, I disseminated information, performed various functions, and coordinated units within the five-state Navy Region Southwest.



11/97 – 10/00: USS Key West (SSN 722)

Pearl Harbor, HI

Aboard the nuclear attack submarine Key West, I served as Sonar Supervisor, Ship’s Oceanographer, Assistant Sound Silencing Petty Officer, and Weapons Handling Team Leader. I also served in the Security and Damage Control Parties, gaining experience through constant operations and drilling. I participated in 1 Eastern Pacific and 2 Western Pacific deployments, numerous local operations, and an 18 month Depot Modernization. I also attended Advanced Firefighting, Shipboard Security and Engagement Tactics (SSET), Towed Array Handling Systems Hydraulics, and Quality Assurance Inspector schools.
