QMED/Oiler

Objective


To continue growth in experience, skill, and responsibilities in the marine field, building upon time spent operating/maintaining ships' engine room and associated equipment in order to qualify upward into engineering.


Experience


GBA Ships, Able Motorman (QMED/OILER equivalent):Served as a watchkeeper in the engine room, charged with the single-handed operation/observation of the engine room in port, and assisting the engineer of the watch while underway. Responsibilities include the operation of diesel alternators, fuel and lubricating oil separators, potable water systems, waste water systems, HVAC systems and more, while in port (stand-alone). Further duties at sea include operating main engine, gearbox, propeller, watermaker and stabilizer systems while accompanied by the Duty Engineer.Maintained 16,000 horsepower propulsion plant working to both restore and modernize the engines. Various projects were undertaken including lubrication systems overhaul (x4), fuel injectors and timing, cylinder head overhauls and replacement, piston replacement, intercooler overhaul and replacement, ect.Have assisted in the overhaul of various pump types (centrifugal, gear, worm, membrane, piston) and for various applications (fuel, potable water, air, waste water, sludge, lubricating oil, ect.) on M/V Logos Hope.Served as head lifeboat coxswain for a time. This position requires a certificate which I achieved after special training. Also helped to satisfy various other requirements onboard for emergency response teams, including fire-fighting, first aid, and first response teams.Was trusted to perform total engine startup procedures in preparation for getting underway.

Machinery operation including observation and readings, startup and shutdown of mechanical systems, satisfying international regulations in system operation and various other areas pertaining to a ship's engine room operation, benefited by an intimate understanding of the systems therein.Medium speed diesel engine maintenance including troubleshooting, valve clearances, fuel injection inspection and overhaul, cylinder head removal/installation, cylinder head overhaul, hand-grinding (lapping), ect.Learning by READING THE MANUAL of the machine requiring maintenance, as well as being taught first-hand by more experienced professionals. Ship-board emergency duties in lifeboat operation, including lowering, stowing, loading, deploying, maintenance and captaining (coxswain), as well as fire-fighting and first aid response.
