Pilot of Inland Towing and Western Rivers

Objective

It is my desire to work offshore either as a Mate or DP operator. I have been working inland and on the western rivers for the past two years. During that time I have gained valuable skills as a pilot and crew manager. I would now like to further my skills offshore, and hopefully gain the DP experience needed to be a DP operator in the future. I am also open to other offshore jobs as well.

Experience

EXPERIENCE

Pilot August 2008-Present

Kirby Inland Marine, LLC Channelview, TX

- Responsible for navigating and steering the vessel, as well as building tow and maneuvering on and off dock.

- I supervise deckhands and tankermen on my watch while being responsible for managing the vessel’s paperwork and preparing safe and efficient voyage plans. I organize timely fire drills and safety meetings, as well as ensuring company-operating procedures are upheld.

- Along with improving my situational awareness, working on towboats has strengthened both my problem solving and leadership abilities. While managing a wheelhouse, I have refined my skills in boat handling. I gained local knowledge of the inland waterways of the Gulf region, which can only come with piloting experience.

Crowley Towing Jacksonville, FL

- Stood an ocean watch while underway and assisted in making and breaking tow. I was also responsible for assisting the captain and mate on watch in docking operations.

Deck Cadet August - December 2006

Matson Navigation Oakland, CA

- Assisted the chief mate in navigation, cargo planning, ship business, and crew management.

- Gained wider knowledge of ship stability and hazardous cargo. I learned how to run the ship’s books, as well as manage required charts and publications. I also learned how to settle crew and union disputes

Deck Cadet May - August 2005

Oglebay Norton Cleveland, OH

- Observed the workings of a Greats Lakes carrier in all vessel operations, including cargo loading, piloting, docking, and ships business. I was responsible for steering as well as piloting the ship during all river transits.
