In my 20+ years of service I learned, and became proficient in ,all aspects of the day to day operation of a major tug and barge company whose primary concern was the safe and efficient delivery of petroleum products.
Positions held and responsibilities:
Assistant Night Dispatcher:
assist and learn about the inner workings of the tug and barge business.
Night Dispatcher:
follow the schedule laid out by the day men and adjust if any unforeseen problems or incidents arose while keeping all concerned parties notified.
Tug Dispatcher
ran the company's tug desk, ensuring timely barge deliveries of our customer's petroleum products.
generated revenue by assisting other tugboat companies when time and availability allowed.
I had to possess:
knowledge of the company's tugboat's capabilities as pertaining to horsepower and wheelhouse personnel.
knowledge of local docks and any restrictions or requirements on going in and out of a particular dock
safely.
knowledge of local tides and currents.
the ability to communicate effectively with oil terminals, ship agents,inspectors, assist boats and pilots to ensure a job ran smoothly.
Senior Scheduler/Dispatcher N.Y. Division:
Oversaw the day to day operation of the Division's 15 tugboats and 20 barges, ensuring optimal utilization of equipment and overall customer satisfaction.
Created and maintained a 24/7 dispatchers schedule consisting of (6) men.
Maintained daily contact with other department heads within the division to ensure our equipment was running safely and efficiently and all repair,inspection and drydock schedules were met.
Dealt first hand with customer problems and complaints and worked to ensure that the customer was ultimately satisfied.
Ran the Division"s "bunker desk". Was the first point of contact for the major bunker suppliers to ensure timely delivery to the ships they sold bunkers to.
First point of contact for the "night dispatchers" to consult and advise on any problem that might arise.
