Night Port Manager September 1999 to December 2000
In charge of all port night activities including vessel operations, container freight station (CFS), security, and maintenance in newly privatized multipurpose port (50% container operations). Organized 35 non-critical Chilean office and maintenance workers, who had little or no stevedoring experience, to replace striking unionized longshoreman. Overall production was near normal during its 72-hour duration. Assisted in the translation of port tariffs. Coordinated import process of two mobile harbor cranes as well as various other heavy equipment. Assisted senior management in client contract negotiations. Primary cargoes handled were containers, forest products, and woodchips.

Represented Cooper/T. Smith Inc. in its first permanent overseas investment as onsite project coordinator during final phases of Greenfield bulk marine terminal construction in Mexico. Coordinated the training of semi-experienced Mexican crane and heavy equipment operators with a staff of twelve experienced trainers from the US. Terminal became self sufficient in under 10 months, exceeding all initial project expectations. Managed terminal’s health, safety, and environmental program to ensure compliance with Mexican law. Coordinated import process of all heavy equipment and terminal gear. Assisted senior management in client contract negotiations. Primary cargoes handled were coal, coke, iron ore, and fluorspar.
