Experience


Working as Chief Engineer with A.P Moller Singapore.



I have been responsible for all management, operational and technical jobs. Brief details of which are given below:



• Handling of vessel’s repairs and monitoring vessel performance.



As part of my responsibilities I am the overall in-charge of maintenance of ship’s machineries including main engine, generator, three phase electrical power distribution system, boiler, economizer, heat exchanger, hydro-phore, freshwater generator, centralized air conditioning system, various pumps, motors, purifiers, air compressor, pressurized air bottles, oily water separator, elevator, hydraulic equipments (such as ramp and winch), fire alarm system, high and low pressure CO2 fire fighting system, thruster, various auto flush filters, various types of valves, batteries, incinerator , sewage (including vacuum) system and other ancillary equipments.



As chief engineer I delegate, supervision and control of maintenance and repair of navigation, communication, deck, engine and hull items and life saving, fire prevention, fire fighting and other emergency equipments to officers.



I analyze the equipment’s parameters to ensure efficient maintenance and operation of engine plants, i.e. fuel efficiency, power analysis and system heat balance.



• Human resource management.



I execute, administer, manage and supervise within my scope of responsibility, in order to ensure that tasks are performed in a manner that fulfils compliance with relevant legislation, class requirements, and company’s policies.



To ensure safe and reliable operation of the vessel, as chief engineer, I avail myself of the knowledge and experience of my officers.



I also provide ample opportunity to the officers to use their knowledge and experience. Keep them informed about the intent of my orders and in general encourage them to comment in case of questions.



Control and review both cost and work practices in order to ensure that maximum efficiency is being obtained by my personnel and contractors and take corrective measures when results do not meet requirements.



To ensure efficient team work I believe in the importance of briefing and debriefing to my team-mates.



To develop the skills and confidence of my officers I provide on board training and explaining the relevant content of the following to all personnel in order to promote sound management relations.

a) Company’s procedure

b) Flag state and port state legislation, codes and guidance.

c) Classification society rules and regulation.

d) To ensure that the company’s values, policies and procedures are understood by all.

e) To manage the flow of technical information both internally and externally.



As a part of the job I also have to manage all the engineering department overtime, ensuring that overtime is only performed when the work can not be completed on straight times due to operational or maintenance requirements.



Evaluate the performance of all crew members in the engineering departments ensuring that each crew member is given an opportunity to improve areas which have been noted as deficient.



• Communication



Kept the various departments ashore well informed so that they could co-ordinate and control activities toward maximum safety, environmental protection and quality.



In all respects was responsible for dealing with authorities, customers, charters, agents and suppliers in the best interest of the company’s policies.



I was aware of the importance of providing information to other functions, particularly in matters which increase risk and have a potential detrimental effect on safety and environmental protection.



I always ensure constructive dialogue to exist between all senior engineer officers.



In close liaison with Technical organization would ensure that planned maintenance routines and procedures were uniform across the teams on a vessel.



I attend quarterly meetings with shore managers from technical departments.



Scheduled all shore –side maintenance.

• Spare and purchase



As chief engineer I ensure that the vessel carries adequate stocks of stores and spares and lube oils with respect to maintenance and repair.



I am responsible to note the consumption of fuel and water so that vessels carry adequate stocks of fuel and water consistent with the owner’s requirements.



Place orders for spare parts and consumable supplies in accordance with company procedures.



• Documentation



As chief engineer I have been responsible for maintaining documents relating to maintenance, repairs, additions, changes and modifications.

I ensure availability of a repair log where anyone observing defects could write the observations and which are reviewed at management meetings.
