Position: Assist Chief Mechanic
? Analyzes and resolves equipment problems, and assists mechanics in resolving equipment problems;
? Examines vehicles and determines the nature and extent of damage of malfunction;
? Trains workers and demonstrates repair and maintenance of vehicles, using handtools, welding, and grinding equipment;
? Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of shop;
? Prepares work reports using Windows Office Applications, as directed by the Director of Transportation;
? Plans work procedures, using charts, technical manuals, and experience;
? Supervises the Mechanic/Assistant Garage Supervisor, Parts Manager, Mechanic, and Mechanic Helpers;
? Assigns mechanics to performance expectations included, but are not limited to, the following actions:
? Inspects and drives repaired vehicles to verify repairs;
? Raises vehicles, using hydraulic jack or hoist, to gain access to mechanical units bolted to underside of vehicle;
? Removes unit, such as engine, transmission, or differential, using wrenches, portable air hoist, and transmission jack;
? Disassembles units and inspects parts for wear, using micrometers, calipers, and thickness of gauges;
? Repairs or replaces parts, such as pistons, rods, gears, valves, and bearings using mechanics hand tools
? Overhauls or replaces carburetors, blowers, generators, distributors, starters, and alternators;
? Rewires ignition system, lights, and instrument panels;
? Relines and adjusts brakes, align front end, repairs or replaces shock absorbers, and solders minor leaks in radiator;
? Mends damaged body and fenders by hammering out or filling in dents and welding broken parts;
? Replaces and adjust headlights, and installs and repairs accessories; such as heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers;
? Makes minor repairs to county vehicles along highway, such as replacing spark plugs, batteries, and light bulbs, and connecting loose wires.
? Ensures that a clean and safe work area is maintained;
? Promotes and monitors the use and wearing of safety and protective equipment;
? Observes and promotes safe work practices and procedures at all times;
? Attends in service training to develop and improve knowledge and skills of a proficient mechanic;
? Adheres to proper cleaning methods, storage, proper care, and disposal of equipment and supplies;
? Makes minor repairs to county vehicles along the roadside, such as replacing sparkplugs, batteries, and light bulbs, and connecting loose wires;
? Supervises/participates in all duties as listed under the job description of mechanic & assistant garage supervisor;
? Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities;
? Complies with and supports school and division regulations and policies;
? Reports all accidents and/or potential hazards to the Director of Transportation immediately, or as soon as reasonably possible;
? Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities;
? Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation in accordance with school/division policies and practices.
