Experience
Port Captain. Kitsap Ferry Company. Operated 196 passenger catamarans Rachel Marie, & Melissa Ann & 250 passenger Spirit of Adventure as fast ferries between Seattle & Bremerton in one of the busiest & most environmentally sensitive waterways on the west coast. Managing Captain. Chilkat Cruises & Tours. Created crew training & maintenance programs, trained new captains, wrote schedules, hired personnel, carried out policy, administrative, & Coast Guard compliance duties, as well as serving as Captain. Worked to maintain crew morale & an environment of teamwork for 3 vessels, & 5 crews totaling 25 personnel. Captain. In spring 2001 was asked by Chilkat Cruises & Tours to command & help commission the fastest passenger vessel in the northwest. Chilkat Express is a 46-knot, 63-foot, 3200 h.p., jet drive, foil-assisted, cat built by All American Marine. In summer chartered to Chilkat Guides linking Skagway & Glacier Point, Alaska where 60 guests were beach-landed for wilderness tour. In winter served as fast-ferry between Port Townsend & Seattle, & continued her outfitting & fine-tuning. Also operated their 78’ Allen Marine cats Fairweather Express I & II in Alaska & Puget Sound.
Ten years as Captain & Managing Captain of Alaskan Dream, a 105’, 30 knot, 3300 h.p. jet cat that ferried up to 149 mine personnel & freight in year-round, day and night operation in Southeast Alaska. Part of a team that helped vessel maintain an exemplary service record. Worked with General Manager, other Captains, & Crew creating maintenance programs, schedules & hiring personnel. Updated bridge & wired new computerized mains. Designed and/or installed many new systems, including steering & controls. Obtained approval & acquired materials for interior-exterior upgrade to improve viewing, deck access, & bridge ergonomics before vessel served as fast ferry/tour vessel between Juneau & Skagway. P.
