Objective
I have 33 years experience as a licensed deck officer in the U.S. Merchant Marine, including 19 years as Master. I retired on April 1, 2010 and my Master's License, STCW, TWIC, GMDSS and Merchant Mariner's Document are all current. I miss the sea and am looking for a captain's position on any type of vessel. I would be very happy to join a ship trading coastwise in SE Asia. I am familiar with Singapore and the surrounding area.
Experience
SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS:
Nineteen years experience as Master of American President Lines vessels. Retired April 1, 2010 and license, mariner’s document, STCW and GMDSS are all current.
Skilled in safely navigating vessels in such challenging situations as extreme weather conditions, heavy vessel traffic patterns and security threats while transiting pirate waters (Gulf of Aden, Malacca Straits & Singapore Straits).
Ensured that the vessel was at all times in compliance with all U.S. maritime laws and regulations, international maritime law and local laws in foreign ports.
Utilized strong verbal and written communication skills to produce clear and concise company reports, organize crew training and evaluations, formulate procedural guidelines and conduct shipboard meetings.
Created a friendly and professional attitude when dealing with crew, government officials, vendors, pilots and company support personnel.
Always willing to share and exchange “best practices” with others in order to make the ship’s operation safer and more efficient.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:
Master M/V President Adams
American President Lines
July 1995 to Mar 2010
Operated 903 ft., 4850 teu container ship safely in various trade routes from the U.S. west coast to Pacific Rim, shuttle service to the Middle East and India and the U.S. east coast to Dubai and Singapore.
Introduced cost saving measures by operating the vessel at reduced rpm when schedule and weather permitted. Under optimal conditions fuel savings estimated between $125,000 and $150,000 per 56 day voyage.
Implemented onboard the company’s Safety, Quality, Management System (SQMS) and conducted quarterly reviews of same.
As ship’s security officer created an evacuation plan and defense posture in the event the ship was boarded by Somali pirates while transiting the Gulf of Aden. Worked with company security personnel to improve vessel physical modifications in case of an armed attack.
Worked closely with qualified senior ship staff to prepare them for advancement. At present, six current APL Masters have previously sailed under my command.
