I hope to make a successful transition into another challenging new aspect of the marine industry, where my initiative, drive and maritime experience will prove an asset to my new employer and will enable me to make a positive contribution to any organization.
Experience
July 2004 – January 2007. Marine Surveyor with National Cargo Bureau. Responsibilities included a variety of cargo inspections, draught surveys and hazardous goods surveys and inspections. I also conducted a wide variety of surveys for damage assessment. Performed flag-state safety inspections for several National Certificates of Registry. I operate effectively in an office environment under my own initiative and in full co-operation with my workmates and our clients. Conversant with technical report structures, I am adept with many computer applications, including office and desk-top publishing software, AMOS type maintenance software and some CAD packages.
Mar 2001- April 2004. Chief Mate/Dynamic Positioning Operator with James Fisher &
Sons. Senior watch-keeper and DPO during cable-laying and Remotely Operated Vehicle operations. I was responsible for the management of the deck crew and maintenance of the vessel. I also assisted in the implementation of Company ISM Safety procedures and policies.
April 1999- March 2000. Captain/Chief Mate with Windstar Cruises. As Captain, in overall command of sail/motor-powered cruise ship with 150 passengers. Responsible for navigating in unusual and constrained waters. Prior to that as Chief Mate I coordinated routine maintenance, managed the deck crew. I was also responsible for the safe operation of all small boat and recreational diving operations. I also became familiar with the AMOS automated maintenance systems integrated with a home office network at this time.
October 1984- April 1999 Joined Souter Shipping Ltd as cadet and served through to Chief Mate on various sized bulk carriers and oil tankers. As Chief Mate from 1992, I was head of the deck department of multinational officers and crew. I was senior navigational watch-keeper and in charge of all cargo/ballasting operations and procedures. My responsibilities included deck maintenance, cargo and ballast operations, crew management and the administration of safety on board the vessel. I was also very familiar with Company ordering and storing procedures. I assisted during the initiation and implementation of the Company’s fleet-wide ISM policy and safety management system.
Education
2004 Completed qualifications in US Coast Guard approved Hazardous Cargo handling, General Cargo Stowage and Securing and Grain Cargo Securing.
1996-99 Attended several courses for Fire-fighting Command & Control, Global Maritime Distress Safety Signaling certificate, ISM auditor accreditation, Bridge Resource Management, Crisis Management and AMOS-D maintenance software training.
04/95- Class 1 Deck Master Mariners Certificate from South Tyneside College, UK.
1990-91 Class 2/1 Deck Certificate and a Higher National Diploma in Nautical Studies from South Tyneside College, UK.
1984-88 Graduated South Tyneside College, UK with a BTEC Diploma in Nautical Science, and a Class 3 Deck Certificate.
1983 Graduated comprehensive school with 9 ‘O’Levels (top 2%), including English Language and Literature, Maths, Chemistry, History, Physics and French at Mortimer Comprehensive School, South Shields, UK.
