Marine Operations Manager specializing in training and computer information systems

Objective

I am interested in a marine operations manager position at your company. I will combine my computer information systems education with my maritime expertise to further develop marine operations at your company.

Experience

I have a 1600-ton Master's license for the Great Lakes and Western Rivers, an unlimited Able Seaman rating, and about 13 years' experience operating passenger vessels. During this time I have developed an intimate knowledge of marine operations management, excellent boat-handling and customer/personnel relations skills.

I am currently employed as Captain aboard the M/V Horseshoe Casino. The Horseshoe Casino is a 1,568-ton, large passenger vessel located in Hammond, Indiana. In this capacity, I am responsible for operations management aboard the vessel. I also supervise a 10-person marine crew; plan and execute safety and vessel security drills involving the marine crew, security staff, and casino employees; and direct vessel maintenance. In addition to my responsibilities aboard the casino vessel, I also serve as Captain aboard the Casinos two yachts, which are used for marketing to the casino’s special guests.

I was recently employed as Mate aboard the M/V Lake Express. The Lake Express is a 98-ton, high-speed passenger and auto ferry serving Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Muskegon, Michigan. In this capacity, I was responsible for navigating the vessel, directing passengers and crew members in loading the vessel, and served as the emergency on-scene leader.

I also graduated cum laude (3.5/4.0 grade point average) from DeVry University with a Bachelor of Science degree in computer information systems. I pursued this degree with the goal of combining it with my maritime skills and experience to develop computer based corporate knowledge, training and assessment, simulation, and regulatory compliance systems. I have also conducted research and analysis for a marine master plan project for the Cape May-Lewes Ferry as a consultant for Hornblower Marine Services.

Prior to pursuing my bachelor’s degree, I served as Mate aboard the M/V Trump Casino, a 1,596-ton, large passenger vessel located in Gary, Indiana. While employed aboard the Trump Casino, I developed and presented multimedia training materials for a company wide training program. The program was used to train 1200 employees monthly in compliance with United States Coast Guard Regulations. I also developed a marine department database for tracking weather, personnel, and vessel movement information. The database supported information used to prepare paperwork presented to the Indiana Gaming Commission, the United States Coast Guard, the National Weather Service, and for the ships' log keeping purposes.

I have also served as Master of the M/V Jamaica and M/V Buccaneer, which were 64- and 98-tons, respectively. These dinner-cruise vessels were owned by Wagner Charter Company and operated from their dock in the Chicago River onto Lake Michigan. I was often solely responsible for managing every aspect of vessel operations, including personnel, repairs, maintenance; inventory and purchasing; as well as customer relations, guided tours and special events.

Other experience includes employment with Spirit of Chicago Cruises, another dinner-cruise vessel, and A3Pi Services, Inc., a naval architecture firm. While at A3Pi, I conducted condition surveys and regulatory testing of IMO-code tank containers, assisted in conversion of passenger barge and casino vessel mooring arrangement for Harrah’s Casino in Joliet, IL, and assisted in surveying the historic vessel S.S. Milwaukee Clipper for U.S. Coast Guard approval in a cross-lake towing operation.

I have been involved in numerous Coast Guard inspections including most quarterly and annual inspections at Horseshoe and Trump Casinos, the Lake Express, and Spirit of Chicago, and all annual and dry-dock inspections while at Wagner Charter Company. I have also participated in annual civic disaster drills initiated by Trump Casino in collaboration with local emergency agencies and the Coast Guard.
