Experience
I joined sea as a direct entry deck cadet with Garware Shipping Corp a Mumbai based company which was operating general cargo fleet. I completed my cadetship with the said company. After getting my 2nd Mates license I rejoined the same company as a fourth mate and then as a third mate. I then joined Constellation Shipping Co a Management company, which managed bulk carriers of Great Eastern Shipping Co Ltd as a Second mate and later a Chief Mate.
I left them in 1990 and joined United Ship Management, managers for Gearbulk (KGJS), where I then got my command in Dec 1995. During my tenure on Gearbulk ships, self loaded various types of cargoes starting from pulp to paper as well as bulk commodities.
I left United Ship Management in 1998 and took up shore job with Interocean Shipping Mumbai as Marine Superintendent, from July 1998 to August 1998. The area of responsibilities was management of off-shore supply vessels, including manning of the supply vessels.
After Interocean I joined Mitsutor Shipping Agency, a member of the Damani Group as Port Operations Manager from August 1998 to February 1999. The areas of responsibilities was handling all matters related to a vessel port call, including pre-stowage of cargoes and ensuring fast turn around of the vessel for the principles. Cargoes loaded were steel products, both finished and semi-finished, steel pipes, coils, wires etc, containers, rice in bags and general cargoes.
In February 1999, I rejoined my sea career and from Nov 1999 to May 2007, I worked with Chellaram Shipping (HK) Ltd as sailing Master. Chellaram Shipping is a company which owns 11 bulk carriers. During my tenure with Chellaram Shipping I have taken over delivery of he new building MV Darya Dhyan from the yard. Self was also in the yard prior delivery of the vessel and was present for the sea trails of the vessel and the final fitting out.
I have good knowledge of computer and all the MS Office software. I am also well versed with the computer based risk assessment software “Mariner” of Lloyds Registry. Self has carried out risk assessment with this software on a monthly basis. Self had written the SSO in-house course for the company (Chellaram Shipping). Self had also contributed in writing the draft of the SSP for the company.
As Master and as a Mate have loaded various kinds of cargoes like:
a. Steel products: Pipes, steel coils (hot rolled. Cold rolled, colour coils etc), steel slabs, steel wire coils, steel billets, steel rails etc.
b. Grains: Wheat, Soya beans, corn etc
c. Containers on general-purpose vessels.
d. Rice, sugar in bags
e. Forest products like swan lumbar and pulp
f. Paper products like tissue, kraft and newsprint.
g. Aluminium ingots
h. Various commodities in bulk like MOS, DAP, Kaolin, Silica Sand, Coal, Iron ore and various types of grains etc.
I am currently from 2nd July 2007, working as Senior Manager, Bulk Carrier Operations for Great Eastern Shipping Co Ltd., a large privately owned reputed shipping company of India. Currently we are owners of 12 bulk carriers, with additional tonnage being inducted into the fleet. Great Eastern also owns tankers and has on order LNG's.
My current responsibilities include
1. Contact with vessels - including preparing and sending voyage instructions for vessels, checking and approving intake calculations and stowage plans, discussing bunker replenishments etc.
2. Appointing agents and coordinating vessels port calls with agents, shippers, receivers, and or charterers in order to achieve a quick turn-around of the vessel.
3. Calculation and negotiation of laytime for vessels under voyage charter.
4. Vessel inspections.
5. Daily monitoring of vessels performance.
I have very good working knowledge of computers and am proficient in MS Office and associated programes. I have good knowledge of various email systems like Amos, Lotus Notes, Rica, Outlook Express etc..
