Experience
Assistant Engineer, R/V Kilo Moana and R/V Ka’imikai-O-Kanaloa, 2011. Temporary position on two research vessels operated by University of Hawaii. Kilo Moana was a 186 foot S.W.A.T.H. and the K.O.K. was a 223 foot conventional hull. Both were SCR Diesel-Electric drives.
Chief Engineer, Clipper Navigation (Victoria Clipper), Jan. 1990 to March 2012. Chief Engineer on high speed ferries operating in Puget Sound and Canada. Vessels are powered by MTU diesel engines driving Ka-Me-Wa water jets. Responsibilities include: coordinating emergency repairs; working closely with technical representatives; ordering spare parts and supplies; and training of crew members with SOLAS equipment.
First Assistant Engineer, “F/T Michele Irene”, 1989. First Engineer on recently converted 306-foot factory trawler in the Bering Sea. Machinery included: two 3,100 HP Wartsila 6R32D main engines: flooded reefer system with three Mycom screw compressors, Tecknotherm controls; Braatvaag deck hydraulics; and a 23,000 gal. /day five stage evaporator
for surimi production.
First Assistant Engineer, “F/T Claymore Sea”, 1989. First Engineer on 250 foot factory trawler. Vessel had just undergone complete conversion. This gave me excellent experience with state of the art control systems and a flooded type refrigeration plant. As First Engineer with a ships compliment of 87 crewmembers, I was in a position of supervising people as well as developing maintenance schedules for most of the new machinery. Main engines were two Bergen KVM-12’s at 3,000 HP each.
