Objective


To obtain a position with a classification society or related company utlizing the extensive experience gained in the 38+ years in the marine industry - sailing on board merchant vessels, design, operations, surveying, etc.


Experience


SUMMARY Extensive experience (since 1971) in Operations, Design and Marine Surveying in the shipping industry. Acted as an independent consultant/surveyor between jobs and gained experience in damage surveys, cargo surveys, P&I and H&M claims, including as a non-exclusive surveyor for LRS and exclusive surveyor for Bureau Veritas.



EXPERIENCE



Marine Engineer on Temporary Assignments June 2009 - Present



Managed marine activities during conversion of a car carrier to an offshore vessel.



Design of Marine Systems for FPSOs – all marine systems, including steam systems, in accordance with class and statutory requirements; preparing specifications for and procuring new equipment associated with the systems.



Eagle Bulk Shipping/Technical Manager October 2008 – June 2009



Eagle Bulk Shipping owns and operates 25 bulk carriers of the supramax size (53000 – 58000 dwt), and have an aggressive new building program in Japan and China. The vessels are managed by third parties in US and Hongkong.



Oversee the activities of ship management companies managing some of the 25 fleet vessels. Budget approvals, vessel condition evaluation and monitoring, providing technical and management advice to managers in critical and problematic situations, approval of repair specifications and repair yards, and other activities related to sound ship management practices.



Provide support to owners and in-house senior management with respect to all activities related to technical management of ships etc. Assist and oversee superintendents from the vessel’s technical management office at special surveys, drydockings and repairs of all assigned vessels. Ensure vessels meet all class and statutory requirements



Assigned with the responsibility of site manager overseeing new building of five 56,000 dwt bulk carriers being built in Japan with modern main propulsion plant of Wartsila RT-Flex electronically controlled engines. Three ships have been delivered and the last two scheduled for delivery in the beginning of 2010.



IACS Classification Society/Marine Surveyor May 2005 – June 2008



Survey of oceangoing ships for conformation to class and statutory rules and regulations including special surveys/drydocking surveys. Vessels surveyed were mostly oil tankers from packet size to VLCCs, chemical tankers and gas carriers, general cargo ships, bulk carriers, container ships and LNG carriers, mostly tankers. Familiarity with all aspects of tanker operations, class and statutory requirements, etc.



Aalborg Industries Inc./General Manager October 2004 – September 2004



General Manager of Houston Branch of Aalborg Industries Inc., Denmark. Manage the Houston Office including Safety, Personnel and Quality (ISO) issues; Sales and marketing of marine boilers, waste heat recovery units, hot water heaters and thermal oil heating units to the marine industry and offshore industry; inspection and survey of boilers on board sea going vessels for condition and compliance with regulatory body requirements; preparation of quotation of repair projects, submission to customers and negotiating final invoice; supervising repair of marine boilers on board vessels including managing large projects such as replacement of furnaces and retubing of boilers; liaise with customers for solution of customer complaints; hiring of qualified welders and boilermakers; order material for boiler repairs (tubes, furnace crowns, furnaces, shells, etc.) in accordance with class requirements.



Independent Marine Consultant March 2001 – October 2003



Port Engineering, condition surveys, draft surveys, troubleshooting and inspection.



- Condition survey (including CAP surveys) of tankers (VLCCs and product carriers) - preparation of specifications for Special Survey and Dry Docking, managing Special Survey and Drydocking.

- Conversion of VLCCs to FPSOs



Eastwind Maritime S.A./Fleet Manager September 1994 – August 2000



Oversee the activities of three shipmanagement companies managing some of the 95 Eastwind fleet vessels (reefers, bulkers, tankers and general cargo). Budget approvals, vessel condition evaluation and monitoring, providing technical and management advice to managers in critical and problematic situations and other activities related to sound shipmanagement practices.



Provide technical expertise to owners and in-house senior management with respect to all activities related to technical management of ships including survey and pre-purchase inspection of vessels, acting as owner’s representative and coordinating all activities at sale and purchase of vessels, coordinating activities with charterers, assisting in H&M and P&I claims, negotiating fleet wide contracts such as lube oil and chemicals, etc.



Major repairs at drydocks or topside repair berths, coordinating with classification societies and statutory bodies/flag states on certification and survey of vessels and during drydockings and repair of damages. Ensure vessel compliance with all statutory and classification requirements.



Great White Fleet Ltd./Technical Superintendent November 1991 – August 1994



Fully responsible for technical management of 5 or more vessels. This responsibility included operation; performance monitoring of shipboard machinery; condition monitoring of hull and machinery; inspection, maintenance, and repair; preparation of specifications, soliciting shipyards for bids, evaluation of bids and award of contract. Surveys, both classification and flag state and maintenance of validity of certificates. Monitoring crew performance, maintenance of crew morale; budget preparation and maintenance, manage voyage repairs, drydock repairs, etc. Acceptance trials of new vessels and test trials for main engine on engine builders test bed.



Military Sealift Command/Port Engineer April 1989 – October 1991



Life cycle and "on site" management of assigned vessels with responsibility to take independent action as necessary to ensure satisfactory material condition of the ships was maintained and vessel was ready for activation at national emergencies at no more than 5 days notice; conformance to USCG/ABS regulations/requirements for safety and classification; Quality Assurance inspection of maintenance and repairs performed by ship's staff and shore facilities; drawing up of planned maintenance schedules and monitoring/management of these schedules; drawing up schedules, specifications, work items, budgets and estimates for drydocking, and attending the drydocking as Owner's Representative; technical representation during negotiations with shipyards on repairs and modifications. All vessels US flag, USCG inspected and ABS classed. Managed USNS Mercy, a ship classified as a Passenger Vessel on International Voyages.



Avondale Shipyards Inc. /Mechanical Design Engineer May 1983 – September 1986



Design of shipboard mechanical systems; preparation of purchase specifications, review of vendor data and selection of equipment on the basis of technical merit; follow up of design through installation, trials and delivery to Owner; Experience with USCG, ABS and US Navy requirements. Involved with design of naval vessels, tankers and product carriers.



Modern Diesel Power/Great American Boat Company/Sales and Port Engineer December 1981 – March 1983



Sales of Diesel Engines - introduction of heavy fuel burning diesels to the Mississippi River towboat operation. Directly responsible for the day to day operation of the company’s vessel retrofitted with above engines, crewing and training of engineers on board in heavy fuel operation, and performance monitoring of all shipboard machinery. Drawing up operational budgets, planned maintenance schedules and drydocking specifications, procurement of spares, attending the vessel for repairs/drydocking and managing all aspects of shore based back up for an efficient ship operation.



Keswani & Associates/Marine Engineer – Naval Architect January 1981 – December 1981



Mechanical system design: sizing/selection of equipment; representing ship owning clients as resident Naval Architect/Marine Engineer on new constructions and acceptance trials at ship construction yards.



1971 1979



Seagoing Marine Engineer including Chief Engineer. Served on general cargo/tween deck vessels, bulk carriers, offshore supply vessels, specialized product, chemical and crude oil tankers, both motor and steam propelled.
