Marine Designer/Drafter

Objective

I am seeking a position with a company which will allow me to utilize my training, skills and qualifications. My experience began in the shipyard with some of my working career being marine work related, with my first job was working as a helper in the Mold-Loft in 1974, progressing forward to a designer. Having “hands on” piping experience, including structural steel knowledge resulted from working as a fitter and a lay-out craftsman.

Experience

My qualifications include working with the Engineering Department, Project Management, clients, vendors and contractors, ABS, OSHA, US Coast Guard, and the Corps of Engineering. I stay updated with OSHA and ABS rules that govern work on various projects. I know my way around tug boats, oil barges, offshore rigs, and not to say just marine vessels, but I have paper mill and petro-chem experience. Having designed v-doors for offshore rigs and equipment locations, assisting in the design of tow boats (various deck arrangements to meet the clients specifications and staying in the guide lines of OSHA and ABS), fiber recirculation systems for the paper-mill and other systems that would ultimately aid in the saving of money for the mill. My experience includes P&ID walk down in refineries to meet HAZ-OP and OSHA rules and regulations.

I have the education, history, including the professional/work experience. While priding myself on being versatile, I have much to offer any employer, not being limited to any one discipline, whether it is structural or piping and designing or drafting. I can wear different ‘hats’ and am proficient with the latest version of AutoCAD. Being a self motivated team player, I would welcome the opportunity to contribute to a company’s success. I can/will be a valuable asset to your company.

8. Choose a previous employer, and describe your greatest contribution to the company.

As an employee of Orange Shipbuilding, I worked with the engineering company on various changes that the customer would want, as well as getting the blessing from ABS and staying within OSHA guidelines. After the project would get well under way I would do most all the engineering changes to the drawings. I wore many “hats”, taking care of the structural, piping and the electrical design changes, giving the Project Manager more time to deal with the schedule and all the paper work that came with being the manager of the project. I enjoyed working with the contractors in getting the job completed, under budget and on time.

9. Choose a previous job you held, and describe what you learned from it.

Being an employee of Eagle-Pro Engineering I was employed as Civil/Structural Designer and I found it very rewarding. I aided in the design of deck expansions on various offshore rigs, including OSHA requirements for handrails and vertical ladders and locations for auxiliary generators. Going on the job site pulling measurements, taking pictures, and talking with the job Foreman on various ways of doing the job, getting feed back from the people who had to do the work is and will always be important to me.

10. Choose a previous job you held, and describe what you liked most about it.

Employed at Orange Shipbuilding I took pride in knowing we had built over 15 small tugs for the U.S. Army and they were scattered all over the world from the US to Kiewit to Ireland, a ferry boat now located in North Carolina that was used in the movie “The Jackal” with Bruce Willis, an ocean going tug that would push a fuel barge (both built at OSB) out to an ocean liner for fuel or even the tugs built for the Corp of Engineers running up and down the Mississippi River, all which were built at Orange Shipbuilding while I was employed there. Marine vessels that I had something to do with and most people will never know.
