As an Marine engineer i may specialize in certain kinds of equipment such as pumps, engines, gears, heaters, or deck machinery. Others concentrate on certain steps in shipbuilding, such as estimating the cost of the equipment needed. Still others may deal largely with one area of a ship's functions, such as lubrication. As an Marine engineers i may also be inspectors. Inspectors make sure that the equipment works properly before the ship is launched. Some engineers specialize in the repair and maintenance of a ship when it is in dry dock.
Marine engineers are sometimes responsible for installing equipment in ships. They may, for example, supervise the crews that install electrical equipment. Others may be in charge of crews that build heating and cooling systems to protect the cargo. When marine engineers design systems within a ship, they must make sure that these systems cannot be damaged during an ocean voyage.
Some marine engineers work with ship officers who train crews to operate the ship's equipment at sea. These engineers may also help officers select tools and spare parts that may be needed for emergency repairs. Some marine engineers write technical reports and manuals for other engineers and for members of a ship's crew.
Skils

• Thorough sounding of all fuel tanks, bilge and sludge tank should be taken.
• Daily consumption of lube oil, fuel oil, marine diesel or gas oil and cylinder oil for daily record keeping in sounding log is to be checked.
• Daily production of bilge and sludge on board for record keeping of waste water sounding log.
Maintenance Supervision
As an marine engineer maintains the ship's maintenance and repair management system. Overhauls for power plant systems are scheduled and supervised by the engineer, as are the routine maintenance tasks aboard the ship.
Parts Management marine engineer is his own parts manager, As an maintaining an inventory of spare parts and replenishing that inventory in a timely manner.
Maintenance Accounting
As an marine engineer i wll keeps track of maintenance expenses for both repairs done on board and repairs made in the shipyard. He also estimates the future maintenance and engineering costs for the ship. This information is critical to a shipping company's budgetary process.
Repair Planning
As part of my duties, the marine engineer "keeps a book" on repairs that need to be made when the ship makes its required annual journey to the shipyard for inspection. The marine engineer will use this record to help plan necessary maintenance for those times.
Repair Supervision
As an While the ship is in the shipyard, the shipping company's Port Engineer will come aboard to supervise and approve work to be done. The ship's marine engineer will assist in the inspection and supervision of this work.
