• Coordination of the pool of 10 UK-based Engineer Superintendent personnel plus 4 overseas based Superintendents operating a fleet of Crude, Product, UK Coastal and LNG vessels.
• Development of maintenance optimisation tools and systems to deliver continuous improvement in operating reliability and cost.
• Development of ships’ operating budgets in conjunction with the Superintendents and ship’s staff and to fully monitor and account for spend within the agreed budget structure and financial authorities.
• Closely monitoring the operational performance of each nominated ship and instigating corrective actions to ensure that optimum performance is always maintained.
• Supervising the compilation of repair lists and specifications and the completion of main event dry-docking and repair activities.

Engineer Superintendent, Fleet Operations 1993 to 2001

Core Responsibilities:
• Operating 25 year old VLCC’s in a cost effective and safe manner.
• Operation of 2 – 3rd party owned VLCC’s including regular liaison with the Japanese Owners.
• Delivery of 4 VLCC’s to a disposal yards in China at minimum cost and with zero pollution or accidents and complying with company environmental policies.
• Management of the ship’s budgets.
• Carrying out dry dockings including the compilation of the repair lists
• Taking delivery of 4 new ULCCs from the builders yard in Korea. Sailing with the ships on their maiden voyages to assist the ships staff and to provide assurance to operations group prior to vessels loading their first cargo. All vessels passing Flag State and Oil Major inspections without comments at first inspection.
• Ensuring full compliance by the vessels with the company’s Quality Assurance System and Environmental Assurance policies.
• Optimising availability and performance of the vessels taking full advantage of off hire and other idle time between and during voyages. By regular contact with the ship’s senior staff it has been possible to achieve all voyage repairs during time awaiting cargoes.
Achievements:
• Reduction of operating budgets by 3% without loss of operation integrity.
• All dockings and main event repair periods carried out within budget and time
• Carrying out maintenance audits with feedback to partner companies operating in USA.
Manager, Lay up Services - BP Shipcare July 1991 to Dec 1994
Core Responsibilities:
Responsible for controlling the budgets and day-to-day operations of the company from the UK.
Achievements
Successful project management of the pre-conversion work on "Cossack Pioneer" for Woodside Petroleum including the removal and disposal of all asbestos on the vessel necessitating negotiations with Malaysian Government. Recruiting sufficient local staff in Labuan, East Malaysia and having the necessary training carried out by the asbestos removal contractor.
Supplying quotations and negotiating contracts with various owners of ships and rigs, for the supply of lay up services and additional maintenance work as required. Regular reporting to the owners of condition on their vessels.
Emergency Response Superintendent Jan 1992 to Nov 1993
This role was carried out in addition to the Manager Lay-up Services.
Core Responsibilities:
Administration of BP Shipping emergency response room facilities.
Planning and implementing emergency response exercises.
Achievements
• Major exercises carried with Australian Division and Alaska.
• Implementation of OPA'90 legislation in the fleet.
• Carrying out the assessment of new breathing apparatus sets for the fleet with recommendations to the tender committee and the subsequent purchasing of units for the owned and managed fleet.
Consultant Engineer Jan 1991 to July 1991
Core Responsibilities:
• Seconded to Lagoven Petroleum in Venezuela as Engineer Consultant to their fleet.
• Responsible for advising their Superintendents on marine engineering work practices and to making recommendations regarding the operations of the technical aspects of the fleet as regards the maintenance of the fleet both in service and for major repair periods, stores and spare gear ordering and general technical administration of the fleet.
Achievements
• Gaining agreement for implementing a computerised planned maintenance system.
• Introduction of an entry and hot work permit system.
Engineer Superintendent BP Oil UK 1986 to 1990
Core Responsibilities:
• Responsible for the technical operation of a fleet of 6 coastal oil tankers.
• Preparation of repair lists and specifications of items for survey and dry-docking. Arranging for and supervising the repair, modifications and maintenance of the vessels. On completion of the dockings, negotiation of repair accounts and subsequent agreement for payments.
Achievements
• Implementing cost reductions of fleet dockings by changing frequency from 1 to 2 years and at the same time improving the quality of operations
• Processing insurance claims in conjunction with the Salvage Association surveyors and Underwriters ensuring a satisfactory settlement is reached.
• Arranging and presenting annual staff seminars for the vessels staff.
Engineer Superintendent's Assistant 1985 to 1986
Irano-British Ship Service Company.
Assisting the Engineer Superintendent with the re-delivery of the joint venture company vessels to their respective owners.
Co-ordinating the activities of the on board staff employed by differing manning agencies.
This resulted in successfully transferring the Iranian Flag vessels to their owners control.
