The NOL Group (NOL) is a global transportation and logistics company engaged in shipping and related businesses. NOL operates through its wholly-owned subsidiaries American President Lines (APL) and APL Logistics (APLL).
I joined the NOL Group as a trainee in NOL’s three year management trainee program. My training included postings in both APL and APL Logistics, with my 1st and 2nd year postings in my home country (USA) and my 3rd year posting overseas (Singapore). Through the program I gained a wealth of knowledge and experience in different aspects of the transportation business.
Aug 2004 – Present Manager - Tools & Systems

• Responsible for managing the technology roadmap of all APL Sales & Marketing systems
• Responsible for managing application development throughout the entire project lifecycle
• Work directly with users and IT to document business processes and requirements
• Develop the functional requirements and logical design for systems and enhancements
• Identify business use cases and develop test plans for system testing
• Organize and manage user acceptance testing
• Manage implementation “go-live” activities and post-implementation support

• Successfully implemented numerous system enhancements and solutions (some in progress): WebLogic to WebSphere migration, Anti-spam compliance, Data integrity initiative, Offline templates, etc.

Apr 2003 – Jul 2004 Specialist - Port & Container Security

• Managed security initiatives to attain compliance with international maritime security regulations
• Worked closely with APL marine terminals to prepare for C-TPAT security audits conducted by the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol
• Designed and developed APL’s Security Awareness training program
• Conducted internal security audits to study marine terminal vulnerabilities
• Worked with APL and APLL business heads to develop and implement business processes to enhance supply chain security
• Communicated internally and externally to staff and customers regarding APL’s security initiatives
• Developed ad managed all Security content on APL’s intranet and external website
Achievements:
• Successfully attained compliance status with the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS), Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA), Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT), Bioterrorism Act (BTA) and other maritime security rules and regulations
• Developed a comprehensive Security Awareness Program, the first of its kind for APL and perhaps one of the most comprehensive in the ocean container shipping industry
• Enhanced APL’s web portal with online security resources for customers
• Much of the work I did was the first of its kind for both APL and the maritime transportation industry in general, concurrent with emerging security regulations at the time

• Responsible for managing all cargo control operations for APL’s mainhaul and feeder services in the Asia, Middle East, and Intra-Asia trades
• Developed and executed cargo control plans to optimize cargo flows, minimize operational costs, and maximize vessel utilization
• Directed regional and country level offices and transshipment hubs in cargo selection and service plans
• Worked closely with Fleet Control and Asia Operations to minimize service failures to customers
• Analyzed regional cargo forecasts and customer lists to plan vessel space allocations and cargo selection
• Achievements:
• Aggressively minimized operating costs and maximized vessel utilization through the development of effective cargo control plans
• Developed and executed service recovery plans during the labor strike at U.S. West Coast ports in 2002

Achievements:
• Successfully migrated global accounts to a new APLL warehouse during APLL / GATX merger and acquisition
• Member of start-up team that set-up and launched APLL’s premium Trans-Pacific LCL (less-than-container load) service. Our team was responsible for building the LCL operations from the ground up.
