DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Use, adjustment, and care of survey instruments, tools, and equipment; knowledge of applicable laws, rules, principles, practices, and procedures of construction and land surveying; knowledge of algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
Exercise of judgment using principles guidelines, procedures, laws, and manuals to determine the best approach to data collection and staff assignment, without immediate access to a supervisor in land surveying field operations.
HARDWARE:
Surveying and measuring instruments: transit total station (robotic); hand-held peripheral data collectors; USB, flash drives; Bluetooth; spirit and laser levels; steel tapes; target rods; Philadelphia rods; LIDAR range finder with orientation systems; Global Positioning System (GPS) differential (DGPS); real-time kinetic (RTK); and static techniques.
SOFTWARE:
Navigation System using Timing and Ranging (NAVSTAR) WGS 84 ellipsoid; Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) PZ-10 ellipsoid. Digital Elevation Model (DEM) topographical 7.5-minute raster data series; Digital Line graphs (DLG) data for GIS; station and offset for centerline control; Computer Aided Design (CAD); coordinate geometry (COGO); Global Positioning Systems (GPS); Geographic Information Systems (GIS); Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) metadata. Google Earth; Microsoft Virtual Earth; Garmin TOPO microSD cards and CD-ROM
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Record data using field notes using architectural and engineering drawing standards; monitor progress of preparation of topographical maps and exchange survey information with department staff, contractors, engineers, and architects.
Real property boundary surveys to determine location of property lines, public rights-of-way, easements, monuments, and ownership using legal description, deeds, ordinances and plats. Transportation and utility surveys; construction staking for placement of utilities, roads, curb and gutter, foundations, steel structures.
Hydrographic surveys using subsurface and underwater techniques to determined bottom position and elevation; underwater photography. Knowledge of tide, current, and wave data; dead reckoning; piloting; celestial navigation.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Remote sites (onshore and offshore) and travel for extended periods; extreme heights and altitude; all weather bivouac (110F to -20F). Pack forty pounds; walk, stand, and bend for extended periods. Metes and bounds, public lands systems.
