12/2008 – Present Q.E.D. Systems, Inc.: As a Stress Analysis Engineer/Naval Architect, conducted research and development for resizing and replacement of a 16 ton air conditioning unit on U.S. Army Landing Craft Utility (LCU) Class ships. Investigated alternative manufacturers’ products and compared the physical and performance characteristics of each with the approved engineering drawings. Developed scale layout drawings of the existing unit, and for the replacement unit to avoid interferences. For the U.S. Army’s Logistics Support Vessel (LSV) Class Service Life Extension Program (SLEP), conducted ship check board LSV 1 at Fort Eustis, VA, to document existing space and equipment layouts and record as-built interferences impacting planned SLEP modifications in various spaces. Augmented notes accumulated during ship check of the spaces involved. Currently in the process of designing a machine shop, sick bay, and a wind deflecting capability for weather deck manned stations. Design work encompasses researching and specifying new equipment, relocating existing equipment, structural engineering stress calculations for supporting newly designed spaces, and compiling a bill of materials for each new equipment and design.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Ship checked engineered the new machine shops, sick bays, dry provision stowage, and a wind deflecting capability for weather deck manned stations for all LSV ships heading to Afghanistan.
01/2008 - 11/2008 American Bureau of Shipping, Houston, TX: As a FEA Principle Structural Stress Analysis Engineer/Naval Architect, reviewed structural aspects of naval vessels for compliance with ABS Naval Vessel Rules and other associated statutory requirements. Worked directly with the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, and other international governmental clients to identify and resolve technical issues. Recommendations for the LCS 1/DDG 1000 Class ships the superstructure, scantling, decks, and frame drawings. Work which involved conventional engineering practices including complex engineering calculations.
Approval of various FEA software models proposed new approaches to problems encountered and made recommendations for changes in methods, procedures or designs, and drafting of technical documentation, reports, and responses to letters, faxes, and other forms of communication in support of structural classification.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Structural recommendations to the superstructure, decks, and frames the LCS-1, DDG 1000.
05/2007 – 12/2007 Northrop Grumman – AMSEC, Newport News, VA: As a FEA Structural Stress Analysis Engineer/Naval Architect, performed Finite Element Analysis (FEA) structural stress vibration analysis for new ship design. Created stress models and performed stress calculations for the machinery room, framing, deck stanchions, hulls, propulsion systems, and watertight bulkhead tanks, ballast tanks, grating, elevator shafts, and the grating for submittal to ABS. Designed stress models to determine the structural integrity, improve design, and achieve weight reduction. FEA analysis for the support structure for four GE diesel generators, the thrust bearing foundation, pump jet motors housing, and many other various other foundations. Utilized Pro E Wildfire, Inventor Ansys, Solid Works Cosmos, AutoCAD Mechanical Desktop, Ship Constructor, Frames 3D, MathCAD, Nastran, Algor, and classic hand stress calculation methods. GE diesel generators to withstand sea state eight conditions.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS: FEA structural stress analysis to support four GE diesel generators for sea state eight conditions.
12/2004 – 04/2007 Northrop Grumman, Newport News, VA: As a Engineer/Naval Architect, Design engineered many complex suspended support structures for mechanical/electrical equipment, piping, scuba tanks, breathing apparatus, fire prevention for the US submarines fleet. The design required research & development, FEA stress analysis, specifications, and recommendation of materials, etc. The issue of design packages which included eco solutions to the shipyard personnel. Inventor10, AutoCAD 2007, NASTRAN
ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Mechanical equipment, breathing apparatus, fire prevention for the US submarines fleet.
12/2001 – 11/2004 Delphinus Engineering, Inc. Virginia Beach, VA: As a Mechanical Design Engineer/Naval Architect, for NAVSEA Shipboard Habitability Improvement Program traveled extensively overseas meeting commanding officers/port engineers to improve the habitability of crew, troop spaces, mess decks, food/beverage serving lines, and mess decks, and entertainment lounge spaces, preformed various ship checks aboard Navy Class vessels ARS, AGF, CG, DDG, FFG, LHA, LHD, and LPD. Engineered various mechanical, arrangements for navy to install and remove, and make way for new living spaces using AutoCAD 2002-2004. ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Ship checked engineered the living spaces for the admiral of USS Blue Ridge, LCC 19.
09/1999 – 11/2001 General Motors Corporation, Baltimore, MD: As a Facilities Engineer, worked on design of robotic material handling equipment for the 2001 models, engineered ventilation systems, designed equipment layouts, prepared GM standard bid packages for purchase of new equipment, and supervised equipment installation. Using AUTOCAD-2000, designed an engineering offices.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Designed an engineering office space consisting of 22 offices, housed inside a mezzanine above the production floor making the ease of access to the assembly floor.
07/1996 – 06/1999 Pioneer, USA The Art of Entertainment, Springboro, OH: As a Product Design Engineer, functioned as part of a multi-disciplined R&D project team using PRO-E to develop after-market car audio stereo equipment. Worked directly with sales and marketing to serve OEM customers, assisted field sales force, and solved many manufacturing design, part, and general line-down problems. The position required travel, considerable phone work, excellent verbal and problem solving skills and experience in directing customers/vendors towards products to suit their or our applications. Other responsibilities included attending QA and ISO meetings, design of multi-language electronic packaging specifications, application assistance, product recommendation, quotes generation, vendor support, and vendor part follow-up. Supported the production lines, testing, prototyping the amplifiers in Monterrey Mexico. Gained experience in rapid prototyping techniques plus component fabrication methods to develop first-time product prototypes and the construction of test equipment, and data collection. Experienced in developing plastic injection molded parts and metal extrusions. Translation of Japanese to English, ASME Y14.5 1994, METRIC system, Pro E, AutoCAD, MCX, and Adobe Illustrator.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Designed the first American after-market amplifiers for Pioneer featured at (CES) Consumer Electronics Shows in Las Vegas.
05/1994 – 06/1996 Procter & Gamble, Cincinnati, OH: As a R & D Design Engineer, was part of an engineering team that developed the material handling equipment. Researched, developed, designed, and managed the manufacture of the machines in the Philippines. Working on-site in the Philippines 1994 – 1996, supervised and guided the manufacture and assembly of the production equipment by the Filipino employees. Responsibility included procuring equipment and material from sources in the Philippines, reporting progress, implementing design changes, and learning Filipino dialects.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Research & developed modular concept machines while in the Philippines.
03/1986 – 08/1990 American Machine Corp., Roanoke, VA: As a Designer, designed material handling production assembly machines to produce disposable razors that involved index machines, hydraulics, pneumatics, linear/rotary motion, ultrasonic welders, bowl feeders, large welded frames, and air rails that air-propelled the products.
