Environmental Training

Oily Water Separator / Sludge Oil / Petroleum Transfer Operations
? Routinely verifying that the Oil Record Book and Oily Water processing systems and handling equipment are accurately maintained and operated.
? Performing calculations of the Oil Record Book and supporting documents according to requirements of the Company's policy and procedures to confirm that the recorded discharges in the Oil Record Book are in line with the volume of bilge water, oily waste and sludge remaining on board in tanks and disposed off.
? Personally making rounds of the engine spaces to ensure that the oily bilge water system and equipment are in proper condition including personal inspection of the oil content meters, flow meter and seals, three way valve assemblies, data recorders and the "White Box" to ensure it is properly secured.
? Reporting the discrepancies in systems or procedures to the Chief Engineer immediately to ensure that proper corrective action is initiated.
? Reviewing the petroleum transfer procedures with the Person in Charge (PIC) to ensure that proper procedures and documents are maintained.
Audits and Monthly Self Assessment
? Assisting with all necessary aspects of environmental audit preparation, auditing and finding closure.
? Coordinating shipboard monthly self assessment reporting.
? Performing training necessary to prevent repeat findings.
Environmental Event Reporting
? Team mentoring, deployment, monitoring and development.
? Assisting Chief Engineer when necessary to report environmental events required by the Company’s Safety Management System.
? Assisting the Chief Engineer in responding to inquiries or complaints of crewmembers or guests regarding improper environmental practices.
Sampling
? Supervising the collection and shipment of waste stream samples in accordance with the Company's policies and procedures when necessary or otherwise directed.
? Maintaining copies of the bi-annual black, gray and oily water sample results and ensure that appropriate action is taken when so directed.
Refrigeration Program
? Reviewing Refrigeration Record Book to ensure proper maintenance of the document by the Refrigeration Engineer and acting as a resource to the Chief Engineer in assuring compliance.
Visible Emissions Program
? Reviewing Visible Emissions Records and act as a resource to the Master in assuring compliance.
Incinerator Emissions
? Reviewing requirements for incinerator use in ship specific areas and acting as a resource to the Master in assuring compliance.
Chemical and Hazardous Materials Management
? Ensuring that the responsible Departments Heads manage their areas of responsibility regarding chemical management including personnel protection, storage, handling and transportation in the proper way following Company policy.
? Ensuring that no hazardous material is landed ashore for storage in a pier side warehouse or other such non authorized facility but only transferred ashore and destined for an authorized storage facility.
? Facilitation of obtaining necessary Material Safety Data Sheets for needed chemicals used aboard.
Non Hazardous Waste Management
? Reviewing all Garbage Management Plan records and waste management operations to verify compliance with Company policies and regulations.
? Ensuring that all wastes subject to special handling requirements are being managed properly and in compliance with applicable requirements and Company policies.
? Ensuring that ship copies of all waste manifests are maintained and copies provided to shore side office as appropriate.
? Ensuring that the aerosol cans puncture equipment is installed and operating properly.
Hazardous Waste Management
? Preparing necessary documents and supervising the offloading of non hazardous waste from ship to the company approved vendor.
? Coordinating with the Environmental Superintendent for the proper disposal of Hazardous Waste and for managing the offloading and record keeping of those wastes.
