Engineering Manager (contract position)
* Senior management position - reported to the president
* This was an extremely demanding, high-pressure shipbuilding management position which required the optimal use of scant resources to satisfy an ever-increasing demand for high-quality technical information
* Starting with an essentially non-functional “department” of 2 overwhelmed designers, successfully developed real engineering capability within the company
* After 2 years, and many setbacks, and with only 7 personnel, we were able to provide high-quality, real-time information and designs to our production and marketing departments and outside regulatory authorities with an efficiency of approximately 90% or better. No deadlines were missed during my tenure. At this writing, the department has not achieved requisite staffing levels to overcome the shortfall.
* Directed and oversaw all engineering aspects for the successful construction three ABS and MCA classed 151 ft LOA FRP tri-deck luxury motor yachts and three, 64 to 90 ft LOA, ABYC compliant FRP trawler yachts
* Led the transition from 2D to 3D CAD platforms (AutoCad to UGS NX5), and implemented project life-cycle management (PLM) by deploying Seimens Teamcenter Express
* Educated clients on many aspects of naval engineering and ship construction during the sales and contract negotiation project phases
* Engaged and managed external naval architects and engineering service subcontractors
* Oversaw regulatory compliance submittals for ABS, MCA and USCG certification of our product lines
* Created a cohesive engineering team whose spirit enabled this small group to sustain a very high level of high-quality output on a daily basis despite the challenges
