Member of AFU (Air Filtration unit) testing team on all MOD Ships and RFA ships

Liaison Engineer for HM Ships since HMS OCEAN refit in Sept-Nov 2002 – to Date.

Draughtsman/Engineer

Working initially on V.T. Hunter Project on Single Role Minehunters & latterly on assignments to the Saudi Naval Base, working on all classes of vessels fault finding/rectification’s in hull, mechanical & electrical problems. Used as Guarantee Engineer/Draughtsman.

Working on 50ft/100 year old Sailing Ketch, involved in both minor & major hull, deck and frame repairs, with all fastening made and clenched by hand. Installation of new engine & shaft alignment. The new paint line/boot topping & varnish schemes, and re-design of interior layout to owner’s requirements.



Jun 1996 – Dec 1996 NASSCO Shipbuilders, San Diego, California, USA

Engineer/Loftsman

Involved in the manufacture of full size templates/manufacturing plans & working drawings for 3 Maersk Container Ship conversions, extracting information of non-modelled parts & profile sketches for work on the new construction of Strategic Support Vessels using Tribon Drawing package.



Oct 1994 – Sep 1995 Djupivag Boatyard, Norheimsund, Norway

Draughtsman/Loftsman/Boatbuilder

Initially employed for Draughting/Lofting on new design of cold moulded construction on 52ft Motor Sailer, once this work was completed, carried on with the construction utilising Boatbuilding skills in the construction of hull & fitting of the major deck deckhouse/deck components. Also the laying off & build of a 14ft clinker dinghy, & 11ft cold moulded dinghies. One of the main projects was to produce a complete set of lines plans & offsets, for a 150-year-old 100ft sailing barge, which had been raised from the bottom of a Fjord. All I had to work with was a rotting hulk on a slipway & a few photographs. And produced a table of offsets and working drawings.



Dec 1993 – Oct 1994 Multitex Ltd, Salisbury, Wiltshire

Designer/Moulder

Producing moulds from MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) for various types of moulds/jigs, for components such as Dormer’s, Large Gutter Mouldings & various forms of fascias. And the large moulded sign fronts for the Mac Donald’s food chains, working from drawings & working with the Draughtsman regarding technical queries.



Feb 1993 – Dec 1993 North Basin Yachts, Ireland Island, Bermuda

Worked on all types of craft up to 75ft in length, on both minor/major repairs in both wood & GRP, craft included dinghies, yachts, motor cruisers etc. from cabin refurbishment’s to new teak manufacture windows and installation

All types of timber construction, fitting of fitted kitchens & general building work. Have worked on schools/factories/shop modernisation & residential alterations. Foundations and footings for buildings and loft/roof alterations.



Jun 1989 – Jul 1990 Vosper Thornycroft Shipbuilders Ltd, Woolston, Southampton

Structural Draughtsman/Engineer

Worked on project for Oman Navy for 69M Corvette, preparing fabrication/construction drawings for Hull/Deckhouse units in Steel/Aluminium. Also compartment layouts/seating & equipment installation, mast construction, outfitting layout drawings, steering gear & gear box seating schemes. Working in liaison with Chief designer & his team, checking of drawings, part listings & material requirements.



Jan 1987 – Jun 1989 Mobay Ltd, Southampton

Structural Draughtsman

Produced detailed construction drawings for steel fabrication for building frameworks. Construction/Fabrication drawings of internal/external staircases & handrails, also prepared layout & construction drawings for chimney flue runs from boilers. Attending site visits for queries & progress meetings during construction work, taking site measurements to maintain the smooth flow of work. And to incorporate any changes or needs of the client without disruption to contract schedule.



May 1974 – Sep 1986 Vosper Thornycroft Shipbuilders Ltd, Portchester

Boatbuilder/Loftsman

Worked in the Mould Loft where the duties were many & varied, laying off work was undertaken in Full, ½ & 1/10th scale from which all template work was produced, also involving Pattern/Model making & all forms of development work, Hull/Deckhouse construction & general fitting out work. Organising different trades in the fitting out /construction of units/ships, also responsible for all types of assembly & checking of component work & installation of equipment. Ranging from Engine and shaft line/P Bracket alignment, stabiliser & rudder alignment and set-ups. I have worked on projects ranging from 37M High Speed Craft for Venezuela, 110ft High Speed Craft for Qatar (Steel/aluminium composites), 52 M Strike craft for Egyptian Navy, 56M Strike craft for Oman Navy, 69M Corvettes for Nigerian Navy & High Speed Ferries for Hong Kong.

Attended in-house training course on CAD/CAM using a Konsberg computer system designed for Vosper's specifically for use to suit ship building/manufacturing methods and practises.



Aug 1970 – May 1974 Vosper Thornycroft Shipbuilders Ltd, Portchester

Boatbuilder/Loftsman Apprenticeship

Served a 4-Year SITB/Trade (Shipbuilding Industry Training Board) apprenticeship as a boatbuilder. Moved to the Mould Loft in 1972 & started to learn the complexities of laying off work, besides the inside laying off work I was involved in the different construction methods within the shipyard, e.g. Steel/Aluminium construction, Hull/Deckhouse & machinery seats. Weapons platform seating & alignment procedures, the installation of shaft/rudder/engine & stabilisation units & their alignments. Attending sea trials to take deflection readings taken during weapons trials, and spending 18 months in the Hull section of the Drawing Office. Working on many of the same types of projects in the Constructive Section of the office.
