Position :- Electronics service engineer.
Description of employment :-
Installing and repairing electronic equipment on merchant shipping, pleasure & fishing vessels, (GPS navigation, satellite communication, radar and navigation equipment). This involved fault-finding to pcb & component level, replacing solder connectors (RF & multipole). Working environment was often ‘outdoor & exposed’, eg ships masts & dry-docks, were safety equipment required.
Responsibilities :-
Ordering equipment / spare parts, visiting vessels, liasing with ship owners & ship agents.

Description of employment :-
The business was started by a colleague & myself in 1992, The company manufactures ‘Fishing, Navigation & Radar marine training simulators’, for use in maritime training schools worldwide. Only 4 people were employed, so it was a ‘hands-on’ role.
Responsibilities :-.
· Making sure equipment meets the international training specification (STCW-95)
· Locating potential customers, promotion, writing specifications & quotations.
· Tendering for bids, agreeing contracts / payment terms.
· Ordering & purchasing equipment.
· Design / assembly / construction & testing of simulator systems, packing & export.
· Keeping customers informed of progress / delivery against delivery shedule.
· Checking health & safety standards, bearing in mind that students will be using the systems.
· On site installation, commissioning & training of staff, acceptance testing.
· Warranty, maintenance agreements & post installation support.
· Operators / technical manuals & circuit diagrams.
Other duties included :-
General day to day running of a small business, communication & payroll.
Health & safety at work - signs, protective clothing, basic first aid, awareness of potential dangers.
Training of assistants.

Experience in planning projects form initial design. ordering, shipment, installation & commissioning stages, through to final ‘on site’ acceptance tests.
Used to working in a small team, assisting and supporting my colleagues, 24 hours a day / week-ends.
I have a good knowledge of computer hardware and operating systems, including DOS, Windows 98/ XP, Linux and interfacing computers to outside hardware and networking computers together through serial or Ethernet connections. I use various software packages each day, (word processing, spread sheets, circuit diagram & payroll).
Having run a small business, I am familiar with health & safety aspects, working to time-scales & budgets and being aware of the importance of controlling running costs.
As a family we enjoy touring around France and outdoor pursuits.
I enjoy cycling with the local CTC, (cycle touring club), circuit training, running and regularly take part in running 10K and half marathon events.
Skiing, scuba diving & trying to improve my French language, also keeps me occupied.
I often find myself repairing friends computers & loading software packages for them, and continually up-grading my own computers, which I enjoy
