WORK EXPERIENCE
Oct 2008 - Present Yacht Help Group Engineering Manager
Daily duties include technical sales and liaising with the rest of the Yacht Help team to ensure we are providing the best possible service to our clients. Dealing with yachts from 20m to 130m, we are accustomed to problem solving and tracking down whatever product/service they need. Focusing on the engineering and deck department, I source parts and products from all over the world for the vessels, many of whom have become repeat customers (e.g. Predator, Asteria). I have built relationships with several local suppliers as well as international companies.
I also take on a project management role, acting as the client’s representative in co-ordinating, costing, and managing any outsourced works, translating where necessary. In addition to my department, I assist with provisioning and concierge for the yachts when required to ensure our team runs smoothly, working together to meet deadlines.
Jul 2007 – Oct 2008 Ocean Diving Mallorca Diver/ H&S Manager
Worked within a team of 5 directly responsible for all underwater maintenance in Club de Mar, STP, Marina Port de Mallorca, Pantalan del Mediterraneo and Varadero, also assisting in Trapsa and RCN. These duties included installation and maintenance of all blocks, chains and lines, re-positioning and recovering anchors, search and recovery for various items, towings, and underwater filming and photography. In addition to this, we carried out cleanings of hulls and propellers, change anodes, and carry out underwater repairs to the vessels. We have also worked with a number of insurance companies to carry out salvage duties around the island. After completing a 60hr course I became responsible for all health and safety issues within the company, charged with issuing notices, writing method statements and risk assessments for all works.
Dec 2005 – Jan 2007 Stuart Cove’s Dive Bahamas
PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer/Shark Feeder/Staff Trainer/Boat Captain
This was no average dive centre. With 12 boats in active service, a large part of my job became day to day engine checks and carrying out on the spot repairs and maintenance. Vessels in operation were up to 20m and had different engines, so I was able to learn the basics about each of them, in particular Caterpillar and Mercury. General dock duties also included repairing and maintaining the huge stocks of dive equipment.
In addition to taking groups large and small diving, I skippered a number of different vessels around the various dive sites, being responsible for up to 25 guests at a time, plus crew. Other duties included shark feeding, training staff and special customers to shark feed, and I also ran a programme for training the new staff from open water up to Divemaster after working hours. This was extremely successful. During my time there I also worked with various TV and film productions, assisted with an attempted salvaging, and assisted local police.
Jun 2005 – Nov 2005 Cota Cero Dive Centre, Murcia Skipper/ PADI Instructor
Daily duties involved taking groups of up to 12 divers out to various sites on one of the two high-powered RIBs, leading dives, instructing and general vessel maintenance. We carried out daily wash-downs and repairs wherever necessary. The engines regularly broke down in service, so I learned how to do on the spot repairs in order to get us safely back to shore.
Jun 2005 SY Candela 12m, Murcia Daywork
1 week spent assisting with deck maintenance. We sanded down all wooden surfaces on deck, and replaced all the black silicone. My uncle was responsible for two 12m sailing yachts in Murcia, so during any days off we took one of the vessels out to cruise the Med as a two man crew; he taught me a great deal about sailing and furthered my education on navigation.
Feb 2005 – Jun 2005 Sureste Dive Centre, Murcia Skipper / PADI Instructor
Taking groups of up to 12 diving, I was responsible for driving a 10m fibreglass custom built diving vessel with Volvo Penta engine, and a 9m RIB with twin Yamaha 4-stroke 250hp engines. Carried out daily engine checks on both vessels and maintenance. Before the summer season began, we took both vessels into dry dock where I single-handedly sanded down all the fibreglass surfaces, patched where necessary, and applied epoxy treatments for anti osmosis before finally applying the anti fouling.
Sep 2005 – Oct 2005 Los Pecios Dive Centre, Gran Canaria SSI Divemaster
Aug 2005 – Sep 2005 MSV New Horizon, 21m Tallarook Dive & Sail Company, Australia
SSI Divemaster/Deckhand
Working in a team of up to 5 crew on this all timber motor sailor. In addition to diving duties I carried out all wash downs, and general deck maintenance. I also helped out in the galley.
Apr 2004 – Jul 2004 Byron Bay Dive Centre, Australia SSI Divemaster
In addition to dive duties, carried out maintenance on the three RIBs and wash downs.
OTHER WORK EXPERIENCE
Nov 2002 – Feb 2004
Prior to commencing work in the marine industry I worked as Manager and General Manager of high-end bars and cafes in Ireland and Barcelona. My duties always included managing stock, hiring and training staff, and generally ensuring we all worked as a cohesive team to provide the ultimate level of customer service as expected by our clientele.
I organized functions, catering and extra staff for various events. Keeping in touch with suppliers and liaising with clients and management was imperative for the smooth running of the operations. I built up relationships with various local suppliers to ensure we could always obtain whatever we needed at short notice when required.
