PROFILE

Designated as the Marine Operations Advisor, this was a posting with a Global Oil Major in their West Africa Strategic Business Unit. My technical and professional expertise was utilized in the Shipping & Marine Operations of Oil and Gas exploration divisions. The post was held for almost seven years.

The West Africa business unit is a Production and exploration field operations area, located in the deep swamp

and is a closed / fenced-in camp. The operations mainly involved Surveying,

Drilling, Construction, Production and Process Engineering, Terminal Operations and Management, Exports,

Maintenance, Projects, Supply Chain Management, Aviation support, Facilities Management and HSE. Each one of

these operations required the extensive use of a variety of craft which included survey vessels, anchor handlers,

line boats, pull back tugs, pusher tugs, OSV’s, security patrol vessels, fast crew boats, emergency response

vessels, spill containment vessels, pipe lay barges, SEWOP’s and accommodation barges (houseboats).

As the Marine Operations Advisor, this would require the detailing for the vessel specs, short list and finalize the

suitable craft, be involved in the tendering process, monitor the pre-mob and compliance inspections throughout

the tenure of the contract and manage the same. Solving day-to-day operational problems was another key function.

Additional responsibilities included overseeing the vetting inspections, contracts enforcement, being reviewer for

new projects, training and upgrading the local work force and the contractor / supplier personnel and leading the

ASRM effort.

As the SME and the team leader I was actively involved in the II&R process to investigate incidents and recommend corrective measures. Being cross-functional, this was a shared service extended to all the departments mentioned above.

I am certified in Project Management & Implementation and in Contracts & Procurement Management.

I have the OSHA certification which qualifies me as a trainer for the program as well as being eligible to conduct

audits. I am also an accredited OCIMF-OVID Inspector & earlier, a SIRE Inspector.

As a Marine Pilot, the role included managing the VLCC and the SPM’s, oversee loading operations and enforce

the contracts as far as the Terminal Operations and Exports division was concerned.

Prior to this, I was the Sr. Port Captain & Sr. Marine Pilot with functions as General Manager – Marine

Operations in the world’s largest grass roots refinery. As a qualified full tonnage pilot, I handled the Tanker

Terminal Operations which included SPM’s and VLCC’s, product & chemical tankers. I was involved in this

Terminals’ Construction and Installation project from its construction days, mostly with the laying of the two

SPM’s, the terminal jetties and the related piping’s, writing up of all procedures and getting the terminal and all operations ISO certified for Safety, Quality & Environment. In one of our external port interests, I supervised the setting up of the FFA and the “Vaikoma” anti-pollution boom and conducted training and drills. The supervision & construction of the two pilot boats from design to delivery was executed by me. As part of my responsibilities, I had attended, the proceedings of The Executive Committee of the 76th Session of The Maritime Safety Committee, IMO which was in session along with The Diplomatic Conference of The United Nations at The IMO, in London. My entire work profile gained me ample exposure & expertise in risk assessment, risk management,

loss prevention & various aspects of marine insurance.

Having been a ships’ Captain for over twelve years (certified Master Mariner FG, currently valid), this is my core competency which includes experience on crude tankers, FPSO, product tankers and cargo ships, all engaged in

international commercial trade and which lasted until 1998. Since then, my practice ashore has once again been

on almost every ship type.

The Masters’ Up-gradation & Revalidation Course and my professional CoC has been revalidated and endorsed to

the latest STCW standards of compliance, which includes the LCHS Course (Management Level) and the DCE-Level 2 endorsement.

More recently, the intense and challenging course on International Commercial Contracting Management

(Procurement) USA, Crowd Management, International Maritime Anti-Piracy Defense Course, Supplier & Negotiation Management from NLP, USA; Accident Prevention, Incident Investigation & Communication (Team &

Individual), OSHAS-18001 courses by DNV-USA and courses in Business Administration & Management have been successfully completed.

My travels and work experience collectively, have given me exposure and understanding rich in Cultural Diversity.
