Chief Mate/Mate

Objective

My objective is to obtain a job onboard a ship or ship yard that would relate to my work experience.

Experience

Dec 2009 – April 2010. Chief Mate; Gulf Fleet Holdings, Lafayette LA. Joshua Bergeron, 337-210-2600. As Chief Mate, I planned the day's work and assigned tasks to the deck crew. These duties included cleaning, painting, and maintaining the vessel's hull, superstructure and deck equipment as well as executing a formal preventive maintenance program. Performed and supervised maintenance, handled lines, and operated vessel equipment. Ensured that proper procedures and safety practices were followed, checked that machinery and equipment were in good working order, and oversaw the loading and discharging of cargo. Alternated watches with the captain. Determined the course and speed, maneuvered to avoid hazards, and continuously monitored the vessel's position using charts and navigational aids.

Oct 1999 - Oct 2009. Chief Mate, Trico Marine Operations, Saint Rose LA., Joshua Bergeron, 800-259-3833. I trained, directed, and supervised personnel in ship's general maintenance of the vessel (chipping, painting, cleaning interior, exterior decks, including performing thousands of equipment preventive maintenance checks and service work orders), duties in all activities relating to cargo evolutions, docking and undocking including all line handling (making and breaking tows for tugs, handling rigging for cargo operations, tying knots, hitches, bends, whipping, splices etc.), standing helm and lookout watches on the bridge as part of a navigation team, winch operations, crane and forklift operators and anything else that needed to be done on deck. Alternated watches with the captain. Determined the course and speed, maneuvered to avoid hazards, and continuously monitored the vessel's position using charts and navigational aids. It was my duty to ensure that the Captain was informed immediately of any condition or incident that arose as per standing instructions. I made sure that specific knowledge and experience was communicated to and shared with all people in the department. Supervision of all maintenance required for the safe and efficient operation of all life-saving appliances (including life boats), fire appliances and watertight integrity was done by me. I conducted regular drills covering internal and external emergencies. I assisted the EHS Advisor with all Safety, Health and Environmental related activities and ensured operations involving hazardous substances were properly conducted and supervised (in conjunction with the EHS Advisor). As chief mate, I ensured correct preparation and issuing of Work Permits, paying particular attention to detail and precautionary measures to be taken as outlined by the procedures in Company Manuals. I ascertained work sites under my jurisdiction were properly prepared and that equipment and tools were suitable for the work and in good condition.

Jan 1969 – Oct 1999. U.S. Navy; Boatswain’s Mate. As a Boatswain's Mate, I planned, trained, directed, and supervised personnel in ship's maintenance duties in all activities relating to marlinespike, boat seamanship, rigging, cargo evolutions, docking and undocking including all line handling (making and breaking tows for tugs, handling rigging for cargo operations, etc.), standing helm and lookout watches on the bridge as part of a navigation team, general maintenance of the vessel (chipping, painting, cleaning interior, exterior decks), crane and forklift operators and anything else that needed to be done on deck. I took charge of working parties, performed seamanship tasks, took charge of damage control parties, acted as petty officer-in-charge of picket boats, self-propelled barges, tugs, and other yard and district craft. In addition, I also operated and maintained equipment used in loading and unloading cargo, ammunition, fuel, and general stores, took charge of and supervised underway replenishment procedures and equipment. Personally trained and qualified underway replenishment Flight Deck Crewmen, and Aircraft Landing Signalmen. Skils

My skills include cargo rigging, winch operations, deck maintenance, working aloft, and other duties required during deck operations. I am well versed in the care and handling of lines and also have knowledge of and ability to use knots, hitches, bends, whipping, and splices as needed to perform tasks such as mooring a vessel. Competencies extend to the safe operation of a windlass including letting go and heaving up an anchor.

I am a seasoned seaman and deck operator professional with in-depth experience in all facets of operations including mooring, anchoring, material/cargo handling, Underway Replenishment/Vertical Replenishment, small boat operations, deck crane and davit operations, helm and navigation, fueling/de-fueling evolutions, drills, hazardous materials management/cleanup, and team leadership essentials. Through years of experience, I became an experienced supervisor and team trainer with over 30 years leadership over cross-functional teams of up to 25 personnel. I employ current methods in motivation, safety monitoring, quality assurance, emergent problem-solving, and esprit d' corps to build cohesive, productive and energetic deck personnel. My U.S. Navy tour was culminated with responsibilities at the Senior Chief Petty Officer level, with myriad collateral duties. I was consistently lauded for team building acumen and hands-on management approach to generate work force cohesiveness. I have particular expertise in safely rigging and operating deck equipment, ship handling and navigation, as well as a mariner with experience on vessels operating in inland and international waters.
