Chief Mate, Marine Surveyor, Shoreside Operations

Objective


After 20 years of sailing in various capacities from Third to Chief Mate, I am now seeking a career change and looking for new challenges and opportunities in a shoreside environment where I can grow and advance with the right company.


Experience


SHORESIDE WORK EXPERIENCE:



September – November 2010 Sabine Surveyors, Ltd. Metairie, LA



Contracted Field Marine Surveyor. Performed assessments and marine surveys on vessels hired by British Petroleum to assist in the oil cleanup of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Collected information on vessel damage and repairs due to oil clean up work and vessel documentation in order to complete these assignments. Coordinated and worked closely with United States Coast Guard inspectors in order to issue USCG Verification of Final Decontamination Certificates to demobilize/off-hire vessels on behalf of BP. Issued Assessment Reports, Marine Survey Reports and Daily Vessel Work Reports on a daily basis via internet from the field to Sabine Surveyors and BP to expedite redelivery of vessels back to the owner/operator. Also assisted Sabine Surveyors with draft surveys of various bulk carriers when needed.



September 1989 - April 1990 Lykes Lines, New Orleans, LA



Operations Assistant. Responsible for scheduling three container vessels for various ports of call in the Mediterranean trade, compiling various reports on vessel performance and cargo layout.



June - August 1986 Commercial Testing and Engineering Company, St. Rose, LA



Contracted Marine Surveyor. Duties included drafting of barges to determine amount of cargo loaded/discharged from barges to ocean going ships, draft surveys of ocean going vessels, sampling of various commodities, and preparing samples for lab analysis.



June 1985 – November 1985 United States Lines, New Orleans, LA



Equipment Control Manager responsible for the disposition and dispatching of shipping containers and chassis, inventory control, maintenance and repair cost approvals.



OTHER WORK EXPERIENCE – DEEP SEA SHIPPING/GULF OF MEXICO



April 1990 – Present Liberty Maritime Corporation, Lake Success New York/Marine Engineers Beneficial Association, New Orleans, Louisiana



Sailed on various bulk carriers in the positions of Second and Chief Officer. Responsibilities included safe navigation of the vessel using both celestial and electronic navigation including GPS, Loran, Decca, RDF and Radar, voyage and waypoint planning and safe weather routing, compiling port and sea abstracts of vessel performance, safe loading, discharge and stowage of various bulk and bagged commodities, calculating stow plans and National Cargo Bureau grain stability calculations, daily draft surveys in port, supervision of unlicensed personnel on the bridge in watch-keeping, steering and bridge maintenance, supervision of licensed and unlicensed personnel in all aspects of deck maintenance and repair and overseeing all aspects of deck operations and record keeping of same, maintenance and inspections of all safety equipment aboard, control of overtime and deck supplies and requisitioning of same.



November 1985 – September 1989 Marine Engineers Beneficial Association, New Orleans, LA

Port Relief Officer – Relieved officers aboard merchant vessels on nights/weekends as needed.



July 1984 – June 1985 Zapata-Gulf Marine, Harvey, LA



Able Bodied Seaman/Mate responsible for the safe navigation and upkeep of the company's supply vessels working in the offshore oil industry in the Gulf of Mexico.

I am an active participant in my community, volunteering with a local food bank, and many different projects with The Starkville Multi-Culture Lion's Club, and the Knights of Columbus.



I am an extremely healthy 49 year old retiring from union work. I am ready and willing to relocate and begin the next chapter of my career.
