Achievements/Responsibilities

• Prepared revenue/budget models for dry bulk carriers (Capesize/Panamax/Supramax etc.) to project their financial statements during their employment period.

• Independently analyzed demand-supply factors for the dry-bulk shipping to project the capacity utilization of existing and future dry-bulk fleet over a period next 4-5 years.

• Involved in negotiating with international shipping investment banks for the purchase of ships.

• Did a comprehensive comparative study of regulatory, taxation, and commercial factors for the various Flag States including Singapore, Hong-Kong, India, Panama and Marshall Islands.

• As a member of chartering team, responsible for nomination and post-fixture operations including laytime calculations.

• Have experience of preparing voyage & time-charter parties and negotiating on charter party terms.

General Management and Operations

• Led and managed multi-national/cross functional teams comprising of Indians, Japanese, Chinese, Turkish, Filipinos and Burmese in executing all shipboard operations including maintenance, control, modification and upgradation of shipboard machinery and ensured 100% operational readiness.

• Proposed redesigning of ‘Planned Maintenance System’ (PMS) software to improve time and human resource management in shipboard operations. Proposal was approved and implemented across the entire fleet of 82 ships under managers, resulting in significant savings.



• Reviewed procedures for critical shipboard operations such as bunkering and stores procurement and implemented new/modified processes to increase safety and to save manpower.

• Conducted base line assessment and collaborated with shipyard personnel in $1.2 million ship modification/repair projects in Japan and Singapore. Completed project in 90% of allotted time with 12% savings and renewed ship certification.

• Implemented company’s ‘on-board safety policy’ and SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) standards of International Maritime Organization on new/take-over ships.

• Conducted vulnerability assessment to identify potential risk areas and liability factors, proposing corrective measures wherever necessary.

• Got ‘International Ship and Port Facility Security’ (ISPS) certification from ‘Ministry of Surface Transport’, India and involved in implementing ISPS Code on board.

• Coordinated with port authorities and other certification bodies at major international ports such as Japan, U.S. and Singapore to demonstrate compliance of shipboard operations.

• Facilitated safety, security and quality audits by clients/charterers (Toyota, BMW, NYK) to demonstrate capabilities of meeting customer expectations.

• Coordinated with Classification Societies such as NKK and DNV for various shipboard surveys.



Leadership and Crisis Management

• Handled responsibility for scheduling of key activities and manpower, planning and sourcing of MRO inventory and consumables, training and evaluation of personnel, and ensuring compliance of shipboard operations with relevant regulations.

• Supervised teams of 4 Engineer Officers and 10 to 25 crew members in the end to end operations for transportation of shipments worth $100 million.

• Successfully overcame several onboard crisis situations involving threat to life and environment such as leading a major fire fighting operation on an LPG carrier, carrying 60,000 tonnes of butane.

• Trained shipboard staff (25-30 personnel) of different functions to ensure safety and security of all shipboard personnel, inventory and property, by conducting relevant ‘table-top’ and ‘on-field’ drills/training.



Logistics and Supply Chain Management

• Developed spreadsheets to forecast demand for spares and consumables worth $1 million and developed procurement/logistics plans for the same.

• Improved the vendor management process resulting in 5~6% reduction in logistics cost.

• As part of 4 week internship project at IIM-A, I led a project at NXP Semiconductors (a former subsidiary of PHILIPS), Netherlands, involving:

? Analysis of historical data to draw ‘Order Lead Time’ profiles of its customer segments/products.

? Identification of segments for which there is a scope of increasing Order lead Time.

? Analysis of Cross-docking Operations of UPS (NXP’s 3PL Service Provider) and Warehouse Operations of NXP, and making a business proposal to utilize the lead time flexibility to reduce logistics costs in the supply chain by 10%.

? Making an implementation plan for the above proposal in consultation with UPS.



Business Development

• Conceptualised and executed business strategies for expansion of School of Art and Fashion Technology (SAFT), a fashion designing school (family business), during off-sailing periods.

• Instrumental in conceptualising and organising marketing events such as fashion shows and exhibitions for SAFT, getting sponsorships for such events and ensuring adequate media coverage.

• Conceptualised and implemented a deal based on risk-reward sharing with a local advertising agency for expansion of SAFT from local to regional level.

• Grew SAFT from 0 to 11 franchisees while also diversifying into other revenue streams such as ‘interior designing’ programme.
