Objective
Captain or Senior Crew position on a vessel operating in Southern California
Experience
Just finished working as Captain of a 98-ton 75-foot whale watch power Cat for Pacific Whale Foundation, out of Lahaina, HI for the 09/10 winter season. Duties included Operating the vessel on whale watches, bringing the vessel in and out of Lahaina Harbor, ensuring the passengers have a safe, enjoyable experience, finding whales and dolphins (Sightings are guaranteed), maintaining vessel cleanliness, taking care of basic maintenance (Oil changes, oil/fuel filter changes, generator service), transporting vessel to Dry Dock at Oahu and overseeing maintenance done there.
Employed the pevious two winter seasons as Naturalist for Pacific whale foundation: Duties included wheel watches, tour guide, one-on-one with passengers, directing boarding, assisting as look out, assisting with any maintenance, line handling, assisted with transportaion to drydock and maintenance there.
The past three summers have been employed as senior deckhand for Alaska Saltwater Lodge, Seward, Alaska. 43-foot Deltas. Duties included line handling, wheel watches, tour guide, one-on-one with passengers, passenger safety, securing cargo (fiberglass, plastic, and special kayaks, luggage, camping gear, dingies...etc), rowing passengers to shore in small dingy, maneuvering through glacial ice, familiarization with local and state fishing regulations, maintaining gear, assisting with fishing, documenting catch, cleaning fish, cleaning boat, using navigation knowledge, local knowledge, and charts to maneuver into areas not normally entered.
Began work for Kenai Fjords Tours in Alaska at 16. After just a month, was considered for the position of Senior Deckhand. Worked there three more years as senior deckhand for multiple boats, and one more year as senior deckhand/dock supervisor. Senior Deckhand duties included handling lines and ensuring crew handled lines correctly, regular enging checks, maintaining the logbook, making sure crew remained professional, and making sure the passengers had a safe enjoyable experience. Dock superviser duties included ensuring an open line of communication between vessels and office/reservations, assisting passengers with limited mobility, resolving problems and collecting boarding passes.
Education
Graduated from Seward High School, Spent four years at Chapman University towards a BFA in Theatre performance, and attended the Alaska Vocational Technical Center Maritime Departments nine week Master/Mate Course.
Certification
100-ton near coastal Masters License, MROP, Twic, Certified Naturalist with Pacific Whale Foundation.
