• Performs all basic functions aboard ship that involves line or wire and rigging used to secure to pier, mooring, or anchor; able to identify functions of navigation and shipboard equipment; lowers and launches lifesaving equipment; handles small boats; navigates by using several different types of compasses; records by degrees or points; knows navigational aids, nautical rules of the road and the buoys of inland US; knows the nomenclature of decks, superstructure and parts of the hull; knows the first aid procedures for electrical shock, simple and compound fractures, heat exhaustion and burns; qualified as 3rd class swimmer, knows how to determine the classes of fires and the use of fire fighting extinguishing agents; knows basic damage control.
