Skils
Sailing as an unlimited AB on many types of vessels over much of the world’s oceans, I have gained the skills and experience needed to get the job done in a safe, efficient and professional manner. I am passionate about working on the water and look forward to progressing as a mariner.
-Extensive experience running hydraulic boom and knuckle cranes up to 20 tons, A-frames up to 20 tons, yard and stay gear, davits, anchor windlass and deck winches.
-Great line handling and marlinspike seamanship skills including splicing and rigging.
-Familiar with a wide assortment of power and hand tools. If I haven’t used it, I’ve seen it and I am looking forward to learning how to use it.
-Able to fix almost anything with the proper tools and materials and usually without them too! Improvisation at sea is something you learn very early on. I have been witness to and directly responsible for many “miracles” on boats.
-Have developed methodical work habits. You don’t want to realize you forgot a tool when you are at the mast head or lying on your back in the bilge.
-Lots of fabrication and plumbing experience setting up and dismantling seafood processing equipment. If we didn’t have the parts we had to make them on the spot and of course nothing is square on a boat.
-Shipyard experience overhauling rigging and deck gear. Assisted gutting and rebuilding the interior of a 200’ boat. Tank cleaning and plumbing.
-Extensive experience doing regular maintenance on all ships systems including engine spaces, plumbing, deck machinery, etc.
-Sailed on many old boats in various states of repair. Nothing teaches you how to troubleshoot like an old boat.
-Lots of prep and painting, mostly steel hulls, deck and superstructure . Very familiar with pneumatic chisels and needle guns, angle grinders and wire wheels, wire brushes, scrapers, sanders, masking, two part paints and primers, etc.
-Routinely moved large, awkward, unforgiving objects into tight spaces on a pitching deck. One more snatch block usually does the trick.
-Lots of forklift experience, electric, propane and diesel. Good in tight spots onboard ship or on the dock moving long and tall objects around corners and over obstacles. Usually with someone standing in my way or sneaking up behind me! Lots of pallet jack experience too, both electric and manual.
-Small boat handling skills.
-High mechanical aptitude. People say I’m “handy”.
-Worn out more Carhartt’s and Xtratuff’s than I can remember.
