Objective
To obtain a deck position aboard a vessel in which I could use my USCG qualifications, the experience I have received after 9 years at sea, and improve upon my engineering skills.
Experience
Call of the Sea (Sausalito, CA)
April 2008-July 2008 Position: Relief Captain, Chief Mate
Served as Relief Captain and Chief Mate aboard the 83’ Schooner Seaward. Responsibilities in this capacity included: providing a safe and comfortable environment for students and passengers on the San Francisco Bay, lead classes in team building activities, navigation and sail handling, etc. Responsible for the care and maintenance of the vessel including all engineering spaces, and systems. Managed a crew of 5, organized logistics with regard to a rigorous and demanding schedule. Responsible for route planning, navigation, organizing and directing drills, and maintaining all safety equipment.
SSV Tabor Boy, 92’ Schooner (Massachusetts, St. Thomas USVI)
November 2007-April 2008 Position: Chief Mate/Engineer
Responsibilities as Chief Mate/Engineer include watch Captain for the Marion Mass. – St. Thomas passage, working in conjunction with the Captain to establish and maintain a smooth operation of the vessel. Responsible for delegating tasks/jobs to the Second Mate and three deckhands, training of green deckhands, preparing the vessel for offshore, as well as for the education program in the USVI. During the program provide all necessary support for students and instructors. Additionally responsible for the care and maintenance of all onboard systems, main engine, gen sets, etc. as well as the maintenance and appearance of the vessel.
S/Y Eos 315’ Schooner (Antigua, France, Italy, Croatia, Spain)
March 2007- September 2007 Position: Relief Crew
Joined sailing yacht Eos in Antigua and stayed on for Atlantic crossing, and Mediterranean season as relief crew. While onboard duties included: working in conjunction with deck officers, and 4 other deckhands to ensure that guests receive superior service, a safe and comfortable trip, and that the boat is in pristine condition. Performed maintenance onboard while in the yard at La Ciotat, FR, including: painting varnishing, working aloft, rigging, detailing, cleaning etc. Maintained bridge with officers while at sea. Plotted position on paper charts, kept hourly log, maintained close watch of radar, GPS, and other navigational instruments. Worked together with the entire crew to ensure safe passage of the ship at all times.
M/S Clasship I 92’ Ketch (Trinidad-Antigua)
Jan 2007- March 2007 Position: Captain
Took over 92’ ketch from complete re-fit in Trinidad. Managed up to 25 day workers and five crew. Negotiated contracts, re-equipped vessel, handled all books and accounting, performed sea trials, outfitted engine room, serviced twin Iveco 190 hp mains, serviced Onan 22.5 KW generators, sourced and installed new pumps for all systems, overhauled plumbing for fresh water system… Responsible for overall safety of the boat, five crew members and up to 12 guests. Took boat from Trinidad to Antigua with owner and guest on board.
Maine Windjammer Cruises (Camden, ME)
April 2006- Oct 2006 Position: Captain
Served as Captain of the Schooner Mistress (47’ on deck, 58’ overall) for two-,three, four, five and seven day passenger sailing excursions off the coast of Maine. Responsibilities include: Overall safety of the ship her crew and passengers, ship operation, maintenance, navigation, planning routes based on updated weather forecasts, seeking out safe anchorages, coordinating shore trips, and providing a safe and enjoyable vacation for our passengers.
Maine Windjammer Cruises (cont.)
May 2005 – October 2005 Position: First Mate
May – August 2004 and May – August 2003 Position: Deck Hand
Worked aboard the traditional Schooners Grace Bailey (83’ on deck, 125’ overall), Mercantile (82’ on deck, 115’overall) and Mistress (47’ on deck, 58’ overall). As First Mate performed duties at sea directly under Captain, followed orders to ensure smooth operation and safety of up to 35 passengers and crew. Supervised and delegated tasks to second mate and deck hands. Responsible for: relief helm; navigation; hand, reef, and steer; sail handling; working aloft; yawl boat operation; general ship maintenance and cleanliness; interaction with passengers; timely turnaround; reprovisioning of vessel; night watch; maintenance of ship plumbing. Worked as part of yard crew for spring haulout and fall downrigging. Responsible for: repainting bottom; blocking; sanding; and winterizing.
Dolphin Cruise Lines (Freeport, NY)
1999 – 2002 (seasonal) Position: First Mate
1997 – 1999 (seasonal) Position: Deck Hand
Worked aboard the fishing vessel Dolphin (60’) for daily and overnight offshore fishing excursions. Performed duties at sea directly under Captain and followed orders to ensure smooth operation and safety of up to 40 passengers and crew. Responsibilities included: provisioning boat with bait, ice, food, and fishing gear; running the deck; supervising and delegating tasks to deck hand; tying rigs for fishing; handling fish (including measuring, releasing if appropriate, cutting, storing); tending to passengers needs; relief helm; navigation; and general ship maintenance and cleanliness.
