3rd Officer trainee, apprentice deck officer, rating

Objective

Server as a rating, or a deck officer trainee, on a bulk carrier, tanker(Lpg,Lng,crude oil) vessel, before attaining my OOW certification, and COC for a deck officer license. Idea is garner experience on other type of vessels, other than container vessels to which I have experience already.

Experience

Worked for over 12 mnths on two container vessels owned by Harren & Partner (H&P)group.

Namely:M/V CFS Palencia and M/V CFS Pafilia

Worked on two container vessels of over 3000 gt, with LOA over 118 meters, and the later vessel LOA= 127m respectively.

Navigated mainly in Caribbean region, Gulf of mexico, and Central America, berthing at about 14 different ports in over 12months. Averaged just over 6mths on each vessel.

Operatated at the Operational/ support level during months of cadet/apprentiship. Fulfilling the requirements in my training record book, in accordance with STCW 95. Onboard training assisted in reinforcing previous training received at the Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI).

The onboard drills made advocacy for a good safety culture, and the amplified the emphasis & relevance for being ever ready to deal with and respond appropriately to any emergency situation.

kept brigde watches with 2nd Officer, 3rd Officer, Captain, Chief mate during apprentiship, hence enhancing my versatility. Navigational checks, safety checks, abiding by collison regulations (colregs 1972).

Composed a passage plan, spanding over 750 nautical miles from Kingston port (in Jamaica) to Havana port in Cuba.

Carried variety of chart corrections, and publication ammendments according to latest weekly Notice to Mariners (NTM).

Experienced in conning the ship, via manual steering gear for over 140 hours, accumulatively for harbour approaches, anchoring and open sea. Helm orders are followed through.

Worked the deck, assist in gangway watches, and anti-piracy watches in accordance with ship security plan (SSP), and the Isps code.

Assist in supervising cargo operations. Reporting Damaged units.

The cargo operations normally last from a few hours to maybe just under 48hrs.

Assisted in Monitoring temperature of reefer units on deck while at sea.

Assist in executing ship garbage management plan, ensure safe distances for discharge requirements are in compliance with MARPOL annex5.

Assist in preparation for pilotage. Pre-departure and Pre arrival checks.

As a member of the ship's safety committee, played a role in making recommendations and discussing matters affecting the ship safety & security (ISM).

Adjustment to sea life;

I got use to the odd working hours, and conditions which can be challenging, especially when transiting ports that are only a few hours away from each other.

Eg. Puerto Cortez, honduras to guatemala and then to belize city.

Got the experience of being at drydock, for about 2 weeks, and the implications of it, having to get the vessel in tip top condition,as soon as possible and on the seas again.

Assist in maintaing ship by cleaning cargo holds and other areas. Chippinp rust, priming & painting. Greasing twist locks and other cargo gear.

Assist in Maintenance life saving Appliance (LSA),and other ship equipment. The computerized PMS consulted,& rienforced with conditional & Time based maintenance.

Navigated through rough seas, and thunderous weather, that had the vessel moving via the 6 degrees of freedom (heaving, yawing, pitching, swaying, surging&rolling). The cabins took a beating, the galley lost a few plates. The importance of securing cargo for all weather (worst weather) conditions reinforced.

Enjoyed the cultural exchanges. The crew was of mixed nationality, so I learnt about how persons from different parts of the world spend their leisure.I learnt of customs in Bulgaria and some customs and a few common phrases used in the Russian, Turkish, Ukranian, and Romanian language.

From the ports I visited I got exposure to spanish, French, papimento and other dialects.

A call from the port to my family members back home, is enough for a momentary contentment, as I really just what to know, they are ok.

The working experience was good and the seagoing experience may I say adventurous, though challenging.
